CABINET NOTES: The Geocell Project, which is a type of three-dimensional honeycomb-like structure made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyester, or other polymer materials.

Plans are being formalized by the Ministry of Works and the Department of the Environment for the testing of this product in the construction of roads in Antigua and Barbuda.

Geocells are expanded on-site to form a flexible, interlocking grid, then filled with concrete.

Once filled, the system distributes loads laterally and vertically, significantly increasing the bearing capacity and stability of the material inside.

This is anticipate to improve the durability  of concrete roads.

  1. I’ve been wondering when they would find out about this. There is also something called mechanical concrete, which is basically the same thing but uses recycled tyres instead.

  2. Interesting concept – is this part of the training Antiguan road engineers are attending in China?
Govt. had great hopes for their 3-week course giving us the knowledge & expertise to build climate resistant roads whose top surface lasts for years, so benefiting any vehicle driver.

  3. I think this is an excellent idea. We have to try something new. I expect it to be more expensive but if it can last a long time then it will be worth it.

BUT…we need to also construct proper drains! The drains that are there lead to no where, not connected, or non-existent.

We can make it work but we have to use our brains.
