Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government will increase the nation’s water production by an additional two million gallons per day as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s water infrastructure and ensure reliable year-round supply.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, Browne said the expansion will come from new and upgraded reverse osmosis (RO) plants, including facilities at Barnacle Point and Bethesda.
“We’re adding another two million gallons of water per day,” Browne said. “We’ve already solved the problem of water shortage — what we’re doing now is building redundancy to make sure the system stays reliable.”
The prime minister said the government’s goal is to move beyond simply meeting demand and instead establish a system capable of maintaining steady production even during plant maintenance or drought conditions.
“We’re not just meeting demand — we’re getting ahead of it,” Browne said. “The aim is to have enough water so that even if one plant goes down, there’s no disruption.”
Browne said the investment reflects the administration’s broader focus on national infrastructure resilience, noting that the water programme complements ongoing work to improve roads, electricity supply, and public facilities.
The additional two million gallons per day will bring Antigua and Barbuda’s total production capacity to well above domestic and commercial demand, marking what Browne described as “a turning point” in the country’s long-running effort to end water scarcity.

Doesn’t mean CRAP to Jonas Road/All Saints people. The will deprive you of water for 4-5 days…you call 211 and complain…they are trained to say they are sorry (but very nice and professional, such nice call center folks, very sorry for what they have to endure)…then you might get water later in the day when you are NOT at home…the water starts to trickle off when you finally reach home thus enabling you to fill up a few buckets….then the cycle repeats the at next 4-5 days. BUBBISH!
I always hearing how THIS and THAT plant coming online and will deliver how many thousands of gains of water. However EVERY TIME I turn in my tap, pure air I hear.
Is it a case where the government don’t know the difference between water and air?
These declarations mean nothing to me
Poor PM. He repeats the lies of Melford. Solved what water shortage? Where? In the Paradise View area for sure they have gotten water about 4 times this year. Many other areas once every 2 weeks usually late at night. And don’t even talk about St. John’s city with the Cruise season already started. Melford and his technicians are lying. They can’t even solve lack of water at the Stadium when cricket is played and we have so many visitors. No water on the ground during CPL.
This ‘rinse and repeat’ rhetoric from the government and the APUA isn’t fooling the public anymore. Time and time again we hear this on a bi-monthly basis.
Is there someone designated to release these falsehoods? Must be!
I visited a friend’s home recently, and his kitchen and bathroom floors were lined off with large water bottles for washing and bathing respectively (BTW @Complainin’ garots he also lives in the area of All Saints).
Without continuously repeating myself fellow Antiguans, we’d do well to remember that our eyes do not deceive us.
If these people are telling us there is water, turn on your taps and witness if ah true for yourself. Simple really.
Seaview farm needs water every day not just 2 or 3 times per week, better street lights n road ..if not, no VOTE.
Don’t know if these motors are driven by VFD switching circuits, but the APUA need to put a power factor and harmonic correction circuitry in place, not just capacitors because these non linear VFD are affect by harmonics which will be corrected by 4.5 and 5th resonance inductor filter depending on distortion from the power supply which is affected by other customers load surge on the same feeder, so a special capacitor combo inductor circuit to protect these motors at the R.O plant is needed along with a backup generator.
Places like Henderson galvanize factory refuse to take APUA power to corrugate their galvanize up to this day because they complain of frequency and unstable voltage an suppression.
Then these high speed motors at the R.O plant plants are more delicate.
The situation would have been cheaper if APUA had position itself to own it’s power station and set up a flash disalination water distillation system at the plant return salt water line from the sea that cools the engines giving us potable water at no cost.
In this situation the more we get R.O plants the more the hadeed power station will be paid because the power consumption of these motors are equivalent to a village or hotel load consumption pattern , and with the high maintenance of membrane replacement and Burnt motor, a flash system is cheaper to set up using all the return hot water line from the power stations if they were our own by the APUA, oops the APUA Former G.M and the present electricity manager failed APUA and the nation there.
