The Antigua and Barbuda Student Association Jamaica (ABSAJ) has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Gaston Browne and his government for their swift intervention and assistance during the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
In a letter dated November 1, 2025, ABSAJ President Jewel Moore commended the Prime Minister’s “swift and thoughtful intervention” in arranging accommodation for students at the Pegasus Hotel amid the storm. The association said the government’s actions provided comfort and safety “during an extremely challenging time.”
Moore also thanked Browne and his team for coordinating with LIAT to explore evacuation options for students if conditions in Jamaica had worsened. “Even though it was not utilized, we truly appreciate the efforts made to provide us transportation away from the impending danger when our safety was not guaranteed,” the letter stated.
The association said the government’s compassion reflected “the very best of our nation’s values,” adding that Browne’s commitment to the welfare of students studying abroad demonstrates his investment in shaping the future of Antigua and Barbuda’s youth.
“We are sincerely grateful for the government’s continued support and for standing by us in this moment of need,” Moore wrote. “Your actions have not only safeguarded us physically but have strengthened our sense of pride and connection to our beloved nation Antigua and Barbuda.”
