The Antigua and Barbuda Student Association in Jamaica has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government of Antigua and Barbuda for its swift assistance and care during the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

In a letter addressed to Maurice Merchant, Director-General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, the association’s president, Jewel Moore, praised the government’s intervention in ensuring the safety and comfort of Antiguan and Barbudan students stranded in Jamaica during the storm.

Moore commended Merchant and his team for arranging accommodations at the Pegasus Hotel and for their “swift and thoughtful intervention” during what she described as an “extremely challenging time.”

“We are especially grateful to you for having been listening to our questions and concerns and advocating on our behalf to other governmental officials in Antigua and Barbuda,” Moore wrote. “Knowing that our well-being was being so carefully monitored and prioritized brought us great assurance and peace of mind.”

The association said the government’s compassion reflected the best of the nation’s values and its commitment to the welfare of students studying abroad.

“We are sincerely grateful for the government’s continued support and for standing by us in this moment of need,” Moore added. “Your actions have not only safeguarded us physically but have strengthened our sense of pride and connection to our beloved nation, Antigua and Barbuda.”

Hurricane Melissa struck parts of Jamaica in late October, prompting temporary displacements and travel disruptions that affected several regional students.
