Antigua and Barbuda welcomed a record 1.2 million visitors in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and setting a new benchmark for the country’s tourism industry.

Officials announced the milestone at the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Year in Review press conference, highlighting the sector’s continued growth and resilience.

Maria Blackman, Marketing Communications Manager at the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA), attributed the success to strategic marketing efforts, strong partnerships, and the dedication of tourism stakeholders.

“These figures demonstrate not just recovery but significant progress. The commitment of our team, partners, and the broader tourism community has been crucial in achieving this milestone,” Blackman said.

Key Achievements in 2024

  • 1.2 million visitors – A record-breaking figure, exceeding 2019 levels.
  • 17% increase in air arrivals – More than 50,000 additional passengers compared to 2023.
  • Cruise tourism growth – 428 cruise ship calls, up from 372 the previous year.
  • Hotel sector expansion – New properties, including the Marriott at Yepton and One&Only Half Moon Bay, set to increase accommodation capacity.

Marketing and Strategic Initiatives

The ABTA’s ‘Be’ campaign played a key role in promoting Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural and natural attractions, while digital marketing efforts expanded the destination’s reach in key markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean.

Outlook for 2025

Tourism officials aim to build on this success by expanding airlift capacity, diversifying visitor experiences, and addressing infrastructure challenges to support rising demand.

With sustained investment and strategic planning, Antigua and Barbuda are poised to remain one of the Caribbean’s leading tourist destinations

  1. Reaching a record 1.2 million visitors in 2024 is a fantastic achievement for Antigua and Barbuda! This milestone highlights the strength of the country’s tourism sector and the appeal of its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture. However, with such growth, it’s important to ensure that infrastructure, local services, and environmental sustainability keep pace. Increased tourism should benefit not only the economy but also the everyday lives of residents.

  2. While celebrating this success, the government must also address concerns about over-tourism, the strain on local resources, and fair wages for hospitality workers. Sustainable tourism strategies should be a priority to maintain this growth without negatively impacting local communities and the environment.
