Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, has announced a substantial step forward in the nation’s healthcare sector with the acquisition of a $12.6 million loan facilitated by the Inter-American Development Bank.

The funding will play a pivotal role in reinforcing critical healthcare infrastructure, particularly at the Dialysis and Renal Centre, as well as aiding the establishment of a Cardiac Centre at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

Addressing the Parliament, Prime Minister Browne emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing the reopening of the Cancer Centre.

Following the compulsory acquisition of the facility, the government intends to collaborate with the private sector to ensure its efficient operation, addressing the immediate need for accessible cancer treatment.

In his statement, Browne highlighted a holistic approach to healthcare, focusing on both treatment and preventive measures.

Acknowledging the importance of knowledge, he commended the efforts of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and the Medical Benefits Scheme in actively promoting healthy lifestyles, including increased physical activity and better nutrition among citizens.

Emphasizing the government’s encouragement of private sector investments, Browne pointed to Sir Joseph John’s Doctors’ Hospital as an example.

The broader vision is to position Antigua and Barbuda as a hub for medical tourism, contributing to economic growth and the well-being of citizens.

  1. Come Now…

Toxic slbmc cannot be fixed and nugent ave is the hospital that wasnt.
The minister of healtb is the problem. He micromanages, messes up and blatantly shifts BLAME (boldface equivocator). Its always someone else who poorly manages, its always someone else who didnt answer correctly, its always someone else who didnt handle the situation or address the issue adequately. He is always only just finding out. FIRE THE FART!! He is the PROBLEM.

  2. Tell Antigua even the idiots that thinks you are a good PM how much countries, companies, rich people Antigua done borrow money from and how much loans this country have out there???

Just constantly hearing and reading in the news about loans here loans there, oh my word how much loans, what interest and how much Antigua paying back??
And we still not getting shit done…….

  3. SLBMC needs more staff. Our young doctors are used efficiently. They are being treated like slaves. Their hours of working is inhumane. The customer service of some of the nursing staff & the ER operations of the hospital needs a complete overhaul. Unless the cries of the people are not listened to and acted upon, then SLBMC will not be an appropriate hospital to become a hub for medical tourism.
