PM Browne Rejects U.S. Allegations of Human Trafficking Over Cuban Doctors

St. John’s, AntiguaPrime Minister Gaston Browne has rejected U.S. claims that Cuba’s medical assistance program constitutes human trafficking, defending the critical role Cuban doctors and nurses play in Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare system and across the Caribbean.

“We totally reject that notion that we are involved in any form of human trafficking,” Browne stated. “The United States also must understand that these Cuban doctors and nurses represent the core of our healthcare service within the Caribbean.”

The U.S. has raised concerns over how Cuba compensates its medical professionals, with allegations that portions of their earnings go directly to the Cuban government. Browne acknowledged that payment structures could be reviewed but dismissed the need for threats or punitive measures.

“If we have to review the payment mechanism, that is something we can look at. But this extraterritorial positioning, articulation, and threats—I don’t know that this is the route we need to go,” he said.

Browne also emphasized that any U.S. action to curtail Cuba’s medical assistance could have dire consequences for Caribbean nations.

“If they were to take any punitive action against Caribbean countries because of the involvement of Cubans who are providing healthcare services, they will literally dismantle our healthcare services and put our people at risk,” he warned.

Browne revealed that Caribbean diplomats would soon meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the matter and reiterated the need for respectful dialogue.

“We are sovereign countries. Their enemies are not our enemies,” he said. “We are friends of all, enemies of none.”

    • No America want to control countries and they literally want Cuba to have no income with the outside world to stave them that’s their goal. Make Cuba suffer because they fought and won against American imperialism which had them being slaves just like what the French did to Haiti. And the fact they are socialist makes it worst they cant allow socialist nations to be free and succeed or it would make them look bad.

  1. They are here on state business, representing cooperation between the nations. Why would their government not be involved in their compensation just like it organizes their travel and accommodation? Is the US going to send doctors here?

  2. “that portions of their earnings go directly to the Cuban government” So they are concerned they pay taxes????

  3. @Stone: You are innocent until proven guilty – Let them prove guilt. Now if a government or company invest in its citizens training needs, then said company seconds those employees to another company, shouldn’t that company that provided training benefit from that contractual agreement?

  4. Don’t be brainwashed..Nobody will accept the condition of CUban goverment put on the contract to those doctors..Half of the Payment must go directly to the Goverment of CUba..They cant bring the husband/wfife and kids with them, if the refuse to keep working and move on with their life..They will be ban to go back to Cuba in 8 years…Im csome countries those doctors are working they only receive 15 % of the salary that those countries give to them…The resto straight to Cuba. So is pure modern slavery, don’t talk and talk without knowing the real background of this story.. There is experience of some doctors that came to work early 2000 and they refuse to give more than 60 % of the earning to CUba…Those doctors where punished for 8 years pluss all the money they had in Cuba bank account was seized…So If you want Cuba doctor..Perfect give them individual contract without the interference of Cuba goverment…BEcause Antigua paid those doctors like Antigua one…But those people are obligated by Cuba government to give up half or more to Cuba…Some Caribbean countries, Antigua dont have a problem if those doctors decide to bring their wife/husband and kids to live with them while they are working..But Cuba government dont allow that. So people Im Cuban man, dont come to me trying to minimize this matter…Remember none of you will accept this condition if your government do that to you.

  5. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is a Cuban hater wimp who can’t get pass Fidel Castro. The Caribbean, Latin and Central America must stand united. US foreign policy to the region is like a man/woman leaving a very faithful spouse at home and go out prostituting with its resources. Sadly, the Cuban population in South Florida can’t see the evils of US foreign policy sucking up to Russia while working hard to keep Cuba in the dark ages. It’s pathetic to say the least.
