Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross Society (ABRCS) Signs MOU with

the Antigua and Barbuda Dental Association

ABDA President Dr. Deborah Akande and ABRCS President Dr. Jose Humphreys

May 16, 2025 – ABRCS Times Report

In a landmark collaboration aimed at improving early disease detection and enhancing

community resilience, the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross Society (ABRCS) and the

Antigua and Barbuda Dental Association (ABDA) have formalized a partnership dedicated

to advancing dental and health screenings across the nation. This agreement underscores

the vital intersection between emergency response and preventive healthcare, ensuring

that residents receive timely interventions while strengthening humanitarian-medical

alliances.

At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to early detection of disease, with both

organizations pooling resources to provide comprehensive screenings. The ABDA will lead

efforts in dental screening for children through the Sunny Smiles Program.

The Sunny Smiles Program is an initiative focused on promoting preventive dental care,

dental education, and nutrition awareness. It also aims to address the oral health needs of

nine schools with limited access to dental services. The program also collects statistical

data to help influence policy and demonstrate the need for expansion. The Sunny Smiles

Program was launched after the Association won a regional competition and received a

grant from the International College of Dentists and Henry Schein, the largest dental

supplier in the United States.

Meanwhile, the ABRCS will extend logistical and fleet assistance to support logistical

needs, prioritizing its mobile clinic for school and community screenings, reinforcing its

dedication to public health accessibility. Recognizing the importance of a collaborative

approach, the ABDA will also offer professional expertise and equipment to assist in

broader health screening efforts, allowing for more efficient and effective diagnostics. This

partnership is not limited to routine screenings—both organizations have agreed to engage

in other mutually beneficial projects that align with the Fundamental Principles of the Red

Cross Movement, ensuring that humanitarian values remain at the core of all initiatives.

The ABRCS President, Dr. Jose Humphreys, emphasized the transformative potential of this

collaboration, highlighting the holistic approach to public health that integrates both dental

and medical care. “By bringing together expertise in oral health and emergency response,

we are creating a model of healthcare that is both preventive and inclusive. Our aim is to

foster resilience, ensuring that every individual—especially the most vulnerable and

children—have access to the screenings and care they need to thrive.”The agreement marks a new chapter in community-driven healthcare, where education,

accessibility, and prevention play a key role in shaping a healthier future for Antigua and

Barbuda. Through this partnership, both organizations reaffirm their dedication to

protecting vulnerable populations, strengthening public health infrastructure, and ensuring

that healthcare remains a right rather than a privilege.

As this initiative unfolds, the joint efforts of the ABRCS and ABDA are set to pave the way for

sustainable and impactful healthcare solutions, proving that through collaboration,

compassion, and commitment, lasting change is possible
