Antigua and Barbuda Ratifies Service Agreement with Dominican Republic
Parliament has ratified a pivotal service agreement between Antigua and Barbuda and the Dominican Republic, enabling enhanced regional air connectivity through LIAT 2020.
Presented by Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin on behalf of the Minister for Tourism and Aviation, the resolution formally integrates the bilateral agreement into the country’s legal framework under the Treaties Act.
The agreement, signed on July 17, 2019, in St. John’s, facilitates the transportation of passengers, cargo, and mail between the two nations. It also ensures that all operations adhere to international safety and certification standards, strengthening ties between the two countries and supporting LIAT 2020’s regional operations.
Attorney General Benjamin explained that the agreement allows LIAT 2020 to access airports in both territories and outlined clear guidelines on:
- Air Service Operations: Operational rights, including access to various airports and adherence to international standards.
- Passenger and Cargo Transportation: Public carriage of passengers and goods for remuneration.
- Financial and Legal Obligations: Fee structures, safety measures, and security requirements.
“This agreement ensures LIAT 2020 can operate efficiently while meeting the necessary legal and safety requirements,” Benjamin said during his presentation.
The agreement solidifies LIAT 2020’s role as a vital regional carrier, fostering connectivity and trade between Antigua and Barbuda and the Dominican Republic. By ratifying this treaty, the government ensures that LIAT 2020 can maintain and expand its operations in compliance with international aviation laws.
“This is a straightforward matter, Mr. Speaker, aimed at facilitating smooth travel and transportation between Antigua and Barbuda and the Dominican Republic,” Benjamin added.
