Antigua and Barbuda is being positioned as a key gateway for cruise travel into the Southern Caribbean following the opening of a new cruise terminal in St John’s.

The outlook was outlined by Global Ports Holding’s Eastern Caribbean regional director, Lancelot Arnold, at Saturday’s official opening of the Antigua Cruise Port terminal on Lower Newgate Street.

The new facility is designed to support homeporting, allowing cruise passengers to begin and end their journeys in Antigua and Barbuda. Mr Arnold said this capability strengthens the country’s cruise infrastructure and elevates its regional role.

He noted that the expansion of turnaround operations means the country is no longer seen only as a port of call, but increasingly as a logistical hub serving itineraries to destinations further south, including St Lucia and other Southern Caribbean islands.

Mr Arnold said the development promotes regional cooperation and demonstrates how modern port infrastructure can enhance connectivity, resilience and long-term growth. He added that the project was made possible through close collaboration with the government.

Antigua Cruise Port’s general manager, Gasper George, said the terminal was completed in under a year and that the wider Upland Development is expected to be finished by mid-year.

He described the opening as a new phase for the country’s cruise sector, noting that larger ships and rising passenger expectations require destinations to adapt.

Mr George said cruise tourism has a wide economic impact, supporting transport providers, tour operators, vendors, retailers, restaurants, hotels and other service industries across Antigua and Barbuda.

  1. WONDERFUL NEWS 🎊 🙌🏾 🇦🇬 🇦🇬 🇦🇬 🇦🇬

Everyone remembers when UPP’s dunce elements PROTESTED against GPH including the taxidriver Chalky and nobody tarl benefit more than Chalky and UPP people, but for politics they want to cut off dem nose to spite dem face.

We are definitely SAFER WITH LABOUR🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

  2. Please
The Old year saw five dozen antiguans embarking on the ARVIA. They spent five long days in the Barbados’ sea-space while P&O cruises awaited passengers from TUI (a charter plane entity that allegedly to return to the UK mid-flight on Saturday December 3)
ANY RETURNED HEAD TAX FOR THE PORTS MISSED? NO!
These big conglomerates only care about their kind.

  3. I love my country and live to hear when it does well, but don’t bother fool us for performative politics tap dog, the logistics at our port is a chaos, where both cargo ships and cruise ship using the same port way, and our port don’t have the turn basin for large cruise ships or cargo boats, the size that could go to Bahamas and Jamaica and mexico can’t fit in our shallow waters, that cruise port should either be located somewhere else or a docking built from rat island about a mile out. But this may sound like foolish ideas but in the future the youths will do it.

  4. @homeporting is a JOKE
Its really sad that the Ministry of Tourism did not negotiate better for Antigua’s ‘Unique’ properties with this P&O conglomerate

In barbados (the leader in C’bbean homeporting), there are many ships that receive passengers from Airbnbs or local hotels.who fly into our countries to board the ship.
ARVIA instead, in my opinion, has dissed the local (in antigua and barbados) properties and provided the accommodation for the two days that the ship is in port.

In my opinion, ARVIA doesn’t need to come back to antigua or barbbados next season. Guest houses and Unique properties dont benefit from this specific homeporting arrangement. Already, cruise passengers dont like to spend locally UNLESS THEY ABSOLUTELY MUST
