Antigua and Barbuda police to introduce real-time licence plate tracking technology

Police in Antigua and Barbuda are set to introduce automatic number plate recognition technology next year, a move authorities say will improve the detection of stolen vehicles and fraudulent licence plates.

Police Commissioner Everton Jeffers said the system would allow officers to identify offences in real time while on patrol, shifting policing from a reactive to a more proactive approach.

The technology, already used in the United States and parts of the Caribbean, scans licence plates as vehicles pass police units and flags those linked to theft or mismatched registration records.

Mr Jeffers said the system is expected to increase arrests and help reduce vehicle-related crime.

The announcement comes amid concerns about rising criminal activity, particularly during the Christmas period and into the new year.
