Browne Hints at Snap Election Amid Opposition Struggles
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has suggested the possibility of a snap election if the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) continues to display what he described as ineffectiveness and internal disarray.
Speaking on his weekly radio program, Browne highlighted the lack of cohesion within the opposition and its apparent inability to present a viable alternative to his Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).
“If they continue to papyshow themselves and cannibalize each other, why should I wait until the end of the term?” Browne said, implying that the ongoing struggles within the UPP could justify an earlier election.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come on the heels of the ABLP’s decisive victory in the St. Peter by-election, where candidate Rawdon Turner secured 75.1% of the vote.
Browne described the win as a testament to the confidence the electorate has in the ABLP’s governance and policies. He contrasted this with the UPP’s inability to make inroads, noting their candidate’s lackluster performance in the same election.
Browne also referenced recent political maneuvers and internal disputes within the UPP, describing them as indicative of deeper structural issues. “This is a party that’s clearly in decline,” he said. “They’re not offering any real solutions or vision for the country.”
While he did not commit to a specific timeline for a potential snap election, Browne emphasized that the ABLP remains ready to face the electorate whenever necessary. “Our party is strong, united, and focused on delivering for the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s comments have added pressure on the UPP to regroup and redefine its strategy. Political observers note that the ABLP has consistently outperformed the UPP in recent electoral contests, further consolidating its dominance in national politics.
Browne’s hint at an early election underscores his confidence in the ABLP’s position and sends a clear message to both his supporters and opponents: the government is prepared to capitalize on its momentum while the opposition struggles to find its footing.

The election date is been weaponised! Was this the intent, of the framers of the constitution?
