Antigua and Barbuda Participates in COP29 Opening in Azerbaijan, Advocating for Increased Climate Finance Commitments
Antigua and Barbuda’s delegation, led by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, has arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the opening of COP29, the 29th annual Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), running from November 11 to 22, 2024.
Accompanying Prime Minister Browne are Tumasie Blair, Deputy Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, Climate Change Ambassador Ruleta Camacho, Director of the Department of Environment Diann Black-Layne, and technical experts from the Department of Environment Arry Simon, Gita Gardner and Garth Simon. AOSIS Fellow Carlon Knight is also in attendance. Their presence underscores Antigua and Barbuda’s dedication to advocating for critical climate finance solutions that address the urgent needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
This year’s summit, referred to as the “Finance COP,” emphasizes the critical role of financial resources in closing the gap between global climate ambition and action. A primary goal of COP29 is establishing a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, aiming to exceed the current $100 billion annual pledge and mobilize resources for enhanced climate adaptation and resilience in vulnerable regions.
As the conference unfolds, Antigua and Barbuda’s delegation looks forward to engaging in impactful discussions, underscoring the necessity of both innovative and equitable financial solutions. They will advocate for strengthened international cooperation to promote a low-carbon, sustainable future for all. COP29 offers a pivotal platform for Antigua and Barbuda to champion ambitious commitments that secure actionable outcomes for a resilient and equitable future.
