World Ozone Day: Protecting Our Sky, Sustaining Our Future by Tyreke G Thomas-Horsford
Every year on September 16th, the world unites to observe World Ozone Day, officially known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. This global commemoration marks the anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, signed in 1987. The Protocol is regarded as one of the most successful environmental agreements in history, as it brought together nations to phase out the use of harmful chemicals that were thinning the protective ozone shield around our planet.
The ozone layer plays a vital role in shielding the Earth from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without it, life as we know it would face serious risks, including increased rates of skin cancer, cataracts, weakened immune systems, and severe impacts on agriculture, marine life, and ecosystems.
The Global Message

World Ozone Day serves as a reminder of humanity’s collective ability to tackle global environmental challenges through science, cooperation, and sustained action. The United Nations highlights this day with the theme of healing, protecting, and uniting efforts to preserve the ozone while also addressing climate change.
Antigua & Barbuda’s Recognition
In Antigua & Barbuda, the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy join the international community in recognizing this important occasion. The Ministry emphasizes that protecting the ozone layer is not only an environmental issue but also a matter that directly affects the nation’s agricultural productivity, marine resources, and food security.
The Ministry underscores the importance of maintaining sustainable practices across all sectors—whether in farming, fisheries, or land management—to reduce emissions of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases. Antigua & Barbuda, being a small island developing state, is especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation. By highlighting World Ozone Day, the Ministry reminds citizens that safeguarding the ozone layer also means safeguarding livelihoods, health, and the resilience of our Blue Economy.
Looking Forward
As the world continues to phase out ozone-depleting substances, Antigua & Barbuda’s commitment to international agreements such as the Montreal Protocol showcases its dedication to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy encourage every citizen to play a role—whether through energy conservation, proper waste management, or adopting eco-friendly technologies—in protecting the environment for generations to come.
World Ozone Day is more than a date on the calendar; it is a call to action. By protecting the ozone layer, we protect life, agriculture, and the very future of our planet.
