The government of Antigua and Barbuda has ordered taxi associations to include representatives from the disability community and has directed that accessibility upgrades be made at the country’s cruise port.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced the measures after reports that a taxi operator had lost his job because of a disability.
Under the directive, taxi associations will be required to provide space within their leadership structures for members of a disability association, ensuring their participation in decision-making.
The Prime Minister has asked Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez to formally advise the Taxi Association of the government’s position and oversee its implementation.
Mr Browne also ordered the installation of wheelchair-accessible ramps at the cruise port to improve access for passengers with disabilities.
The government said the actions reflect its wider commitment to inclusion, equal opportunity and protecting livelihoods in key sectors such as tourism and transport.
