Antigua and Barbuda has marked what officials are calling a “historic milestone” with the launch of its first aquaculture and fisheries training seminar.
Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith Jr. said the programme, developed with support from China for Shared Future and the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center, aims to modernise fish farming, strengthen marine development, and promote smarter management practices.
Smith described the initiative as central to the twin-island state’s efforts to boost resilience, safeguard food security, and create new economic opportunities.

“This project is about more than training—it’s about resilience, food security, and creating opportunities for our people,” he said.
The minister added that China’s continued partnership would be vital in advancing sustainable practices and strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s blue economy.
Officials say the seminar marks the beginning of a broader programme designed to expand the role of aquaculture in local food production while ensuring that marine resources are managed responsibly.
