Antigua and Barbuda is taking a leading role in shaping Caribbean disaster response as part of the region’s first-ever Shelter Technical Working Group.
Coordinated by the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the group aims to improve how shelters are managed, resourced, and operated across the region.
Officials from the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) now join weekly meetings with disaster experts from across the Caribbean, ensuring the twin-island state’s specific needs—such as coastal vulnerability and rural community protection—are considered.
Antigua and Barbuda’s experience with hurricanes and tropical storms informs discussions on shelter design, relief mobilisation, and community engagement.
The country also stands to benefit from pre-positioned supplies stored at CDEMA’s logistics hub in Barbados, including tents, solar lamps, toolkits, plastic sheeting, and hygiene kits.
CDEMA’s Tamara Lovell said the initiative aims to build a “shelter management community” across the Caribbean, while IOM’s Jan-Willem Wegdam highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s vital role in shaping safer, more resilient systems.
The working group has launched a WhatsApp network and online platform to share training, technical guidance, and emergency updates. Future sessions will cover gender-based violence prevention, cash support for displaced families, and sustainable housing solutions.
By joining the initiative, Antigua and Barbuda strengthens both regional disaster response and its own preparedness as hurricane season peaks.
