CMC- This statement was made during the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee debate on human rights, which addresses social, cultural, and humanitarian issues. The signatory countries expressed opposition to the politicization of human rights, double standards, and interference in the internal affairs of states under the guise of human rights concerns.

Political observers say that at the heart of the matter is a statement by developed countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan in which they say they have “ongoing concerns about serious human rights violations in China.

“Two years ago, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ assessment on Xinjiang, concluded that serious human rights violations had been committed in Xinjiang, and that the scale of the arbitrary and discriminatory detention of Uyghurs and other predominately Muslim minorities in Xinjiang ‘may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity,’” according to the statement by the developed countries.

They called on China “to uphold the international human rights obligations that it has voluntarily assumed, and to fully implement all UN recommendations including from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ assessment, Treaty Bodies and other United Nations human rights mechanisms.

“This includes releasing all individuals arbitrarily detained in both Xinjiang and Tibet, and urgently clarifying the fate and whereabouts of missing family members,” they said, calling on Beijing for transparency and openness on the entire matter.

“Transparency and openness are key to allaying concerns, and we call on China to allow unfettered and meaningful access to Xinjiang and Tibet for independent observers, including from the UN, to evaluate the human rights situation.

“No country has a perfect human rights record, but no country is above fair scrutiny of its human rights obligations. It is incumbent on all of us not to undermine international human rights commitments that benefit us all, and for which all states are accountable,” the developed countries added.

But in their statement, the 80 developing countries note that the issues referred to are China’s internal affairs and called for non-interference by other countries.

“Respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states and non-interference in internal affairs of sovereign states represent basic norms governing international relations.

“We maintain that all parties should abide by the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, adhere to the principles of universality, impartiality, objectivity, and non-selectivity, and respect the right of the people of each state to choose independently the path for development in accordance with their national conditions. All human rights should be treated with the same emphasis, with sufficient importance attached to economic, social, and cultural rights and the right to development in particular,” they added.

During the debate, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, dismissed as “lies” and “totally unfounded” the issues raised by the developed countries.

“Countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have turned a blind eye to and covered up their own serious human rights violations such as racial discrimination while pointing fingers at and making groundless accusations against developing countries,” Zhang said.

  1. Why don’t Antigua and Barbuda call for St. Kitts to respect China’s sovereignty. St. Kitts has been disrespecting China by having relations with Taiwan which is a rebel state fighting China. Antigua needs to set St. Kitts straight so that only China is recognized.

  2. I knew this is exactly part of the payment for China’s help. Saying no sense that you know is lie. Being sovereign doesn’t mean you abuse human rights. I was waiting for the sign of additional corruption and here it is.

I knew this PM had no respect and care for victims, as long as he gets his pay day. The bit of respect i had left for him, is gone.

Standing up in saying China does not violate human right, a big, standing for China, but telling me, an Antiguan he cannot stand up for me and my endeavor that advocates for victims of crimes. This man is purely corrupt.

He is horrible. Talking about the Catibbean should be a neutral place, yet everything he has ever said pertaining to the US vs China or World vs China, PM Browne has always worded his response to favor China.

You are corrupt and you know who I am. This is the evidence I needed.

  3. Calling yourself Bilbo is a travesty.

You are an Orc. No intelligence, free thought or principles.

Taiwan is a sovereign nation, and therefore should be respected and left alone to deal with its own problems as outlined for the Communist-ruled PRC in the article.

But of course, 1 rule for thee, another for me applies.

  4. Taiwan is not a sovereign nation. The UN General Assembly recognizes Taiwan as part of China.

This is a fact. My nickname since 1977 is Bilbo. I’m not affiliated with any other Bilbo.

Taiwan will be reclaimed as part of China soon enough. Antigua is in the right side of history with this fight against rebels who want to divide a great country. Antigua needs to pressure all countries in the Caribbean who support the rebel state to stop and give their support to China.

  5. Well, well, well, it looks like the human rights debate has turned into a high-stakes game of international finger-pointing. From dancing around sensitive issues to calling out “lies” left and right, it seems like everyone’s trying to outdo each other in the blame game Olympics. China’s sovereignty is like a hot potato nobody wants to touch, and transparency and openness are the latest fashion trends in international relations. Who knew human rights could be such a messy soap opera? Let’s hope they figure out a way to harmonize their differences before this turns into a full-blown reality show. Tune in next time for more drama at the UN General Assembly!

  6. Antigua and Barbuda should not participate in dictatorship and authorianism. If Taiwan and any other people want freedom/independence, use the law and appropriate actions to get independence like Antigua and Barbuda celebrated 43 years of it.

I stand with humans and their freewill and independence.

  7. The reason that Taiwan is not recognized by some countries as being independent is because China pressures those countries to tow the line. It has to be all about money and land because Chinese are very racist and do not socialize with locals, they build below standard crap and use slave labour. Personally, I think that St. Kitts has the right to support whomever they wish to support. Chinese trying to spread propaganda need to stop trying to dictate their communist crap to the outside world. Taiwan is a free country and will hopefully remain that way. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to take a good look at the destruction of Hong Kong under Chinese authoritarian rule!! Hong Kong flourished when it was British.

  8. @My way of helping, The Caribbean are sovereign Countries, so what are you and the western colonizers Governments going to do when Carricom join BRICS plus?

  9. @Jeb who build the New B.C Bird airport terminal, and upgrade the Harbor? The Viv Richard Stadium, Multipurpose Center and now constructing the Booby ally project.

Name one project the Western colonizers Governments did, all the do is give us lectures and sanctions, more power to China and the belt and road initiative.

  10. @Geopolitic issues. I never said they did not build anything I said what they build is substandard…If you think that the buildings you mentioned have not had issues think again! The quality of the booby alley one remains to be seen.

  11. Taiwan is part of China and not an independent country. China has the right to keep it’s country in tact. Imagine that Barbuda want to say they are independent and do whatever they want. Antigua would not allow this and ensure the country remains as one. This is what China is doing. St. Kitts does not have the right to support rebels. Antigua needs to block everyone with a St. Kitts passport from entering Antigua until they do the right thing and acknowledge China instead of Taiwan.

  12. Imagine if Antigua wanted to say it is not part of Great Britain in 1981? Oh, they said it and is now independent.

Imagine if Taiwan want to say it is not part of China?

  13. Those who are divided between Taiwan and china, you should recognize them as been on the CIA pay check for destabilizing china by backing the west on disrespect of china rights to receive back it’s territory that was colonized, and it’s not about china sovereignty, it’s the upsetting of the capitalist market price structure by china, giving the world to own things that you couldn’t under the western capitalist over inflated price products, a glass window that cost $12,000.00 USD will cost $800.00usd in china, so china is destabilizing there market price and financial projection, making goods affordable to the world over, and that’s the problem between america and china, if china was to inflate it’s price they would become a good partner of American global corporation.

  15. How many intellectual property rights China stole and made knockoffs and then sold for nothing and use that money to bribe countries like Antigua, with the greedy and dishonest politicians.

  16. That is why the Chinese are here in the Caribbean!!! They care nothing for us…only votes in the UN that help them. Their COMMUNIST government has perpetrated MANY human rights abuses. No doubt they are whispering in Hon. GB’s ear to go champion their causes. They are big enough, let them fight their battles…but that’s the thing that happens when you take money from people…you have to do their bidding 😒

  17. @Jeb I worked with the Chinese when they was building the VB Bird Terminal and it was built solid, stop believing in the western colonizers propaganda about China, they can not compete with China so they are doing everything to try and stop China’s advancement.

Because of China dominance of the Electronic vehicles the world over some car companies in EU like VW closed some of their factories, why would the rest of the world rush to buy poor quality products? Man wake up and stop let the western colonizers brain wash you.

  18. Antigua is a Chinese owned territory. They are the owners of the 2 MAJOR PORTS AND MUCH MORE.A Chinese born Antiguan could be the Prime Minister one day. Then what are we going to do? Mandarin would become the language of the day.
