Source Real News Antigua- Former Prime Minister Dr. Winston Baldwin Spencer considers the governance style of the Gaston Browne Administration as retrogressive when compared to that of the United Progressive Party (UPP).

According to Spencer, when one compares the UPP’s approach to governance and what it did for the people, Antigua and Barbuda is now existing in a retrogressive state.

The Browne Administration has failed to move forward and develop certain programmes and ideas put in train by the UPP, so that the people would be the beneficiaries, Spencer says.

And what is happening, instead, is that the country has slipped back significantly.

While his administration, which held office from 2004 to 2014, was a people-first government, the Antigua Labour Party Administration is geared towards self-enrichment, Spencer adds.

Instead of the people – in particular the middle and lower classes – prospering, those who are reaping the rewards are the government ministers, their families and friends, and the upper class, the former prime minister charges.

Spencer says whereas the UPP was deep in its philosophy of delivering for, and on behalf of, the people, under the Gaston Browne Administration it is
the reverse.

He says the people are considered only every five years – during an election cycle – when they are promised everything under the sun.

However, Dr. Spencer is putting the Browne Administration on notice that
the people of Antigua and Barbuda have had enough and will no longer be fooled by political gimmickry.

According to him, they will rise to the occasion, re-electing the UPP, which seeks to make them the priority.

While serving as head of the government, Spencer had dubbed himself the country’s “Chief Servant.” He notes that, although there were many difficulties, his government still ensured that the people were its No. 1
priority.

Meanwhile, he says, although the Labour Party continues to peddle the lie that the UPP is against non-nationals, Dr. Spencer reminds the public that it was the UPP who introduced the legislation that granted many of them
citizenship.

The former prime minister says his Party is one of inclusion – and not exclusion based on nationality, creed, class or race.

Dr. Spencer was speaking on Observer Radio’s “Connecting with Dave” on Monday, April 15, during the Party’s Media Day, as part of the activities leading to its 12 th  Biennial Convention.

  1. As must as Baldwin might be correct as to who are benefitting from the “fat” is was no different and will be no different when and if UPP gets back into power. The may not be as brazen with it as ALP has been over the years but the same rip off takes place.

Harold for instance knows the kick backs during the construction of the ADOMS building that were well masked.

  2. LETTER: Dear Hon. Dr Winston Baldwin Spencer
Why after all this time you have not publicly endorsed the Hon. Richard Lewis as your choice for political leader of the UPP? Why have you not come out and say that he is your choice to lead the party? This is very baffling. After all, you mentored him, he learned a lot from you.

He was at your beck and call. Anything you wanted he did for you. When people went to you for support you sent them to him, knowing that he was just a young man with a young family struggling without political money nor salary.

Dr Spencer, no task you asked him to do was too great. Look at that big event he just put on for you. Why? Don’t you think he is up to the task? Do you think Jamal Pringle is better than him? Then come out and say so. Don’t be like that. We think you are not kind to Lewis. Don’t you want Rural West to have another son of the soil as it’s leader? Do you think only you alone should have that honor?

That is mean. You are our hero. We would do anything for you. We are proud that you, a humble man from Gray’s Farm, put our constituency on the map when you became prime minister.

Now stop being so selfish. Some people say that your wife doesn’t want Lewis because she does not want a Jamaican woman to be first lady. Nobody care what she wants. If Lewis is leader he can be prime minister and help us to get a better life down here.

If you do not endorse him before the convention we will no longer look at you like a hero. You need to man up and stop being so selfish. Do one last good thing before you go.
Plenty people are talking about this.
Plenty of us write this letter.

    • @stop the mean…Why is it an issue for you? It seems like you are more trying to sow seeds of discord and chaos. The UPP members will decide; at this point it’s neither you nor I business.

By the way, if Lewis wins, it’s probably due more to him being attacked by Gaston and ABLP in general, since they seem very agitated by the possibility that he may become the leader of UPP.

  3. What is here stated are all facts, know to all except the semi-illiterate, cool-aid drinking Laborites and Gastonites, many of whom are growing fat from our tax dollars.
Antigua is dirty, poor, beggarly (especially the ALP supporters), stink, cost of living is out of control, crime is out of control; all government offices are mold infested, roads are as bad as they have ever been and the water is completely unreliable.
Always a statesman, Dr. Winston Baldwin Spencer, compared to the crass, incompetent, greedy, liard, Gaston Browne. Our country is leaking millions in tax dollars. Right into the pockets of parasites who call themselves servants of the people.

    • This is just why Gaston is misbehaving again; you have consumed all of his risperdal and now exhibiting symptoms of an overdose.

  6. UPP INTRODUCED ABST and Income Tax. Baldwin needs to hush. The country will be going nowhere under UPP just as it is going nowhere now with ABLP. Both parties are two sides of the same rusty coin.

    • @Baldwin needs….Ok, so where are DNA and missing Link who, according to you, are better??? ABLP inherited ABST and instead of repealing it, not only kept but increased it. So are you saying that if UPP didn’t introduce it, there would be nothing for ABLP to increase?? Boy,what BS argument.
By the way ABLP wish they had kept the PIT and have taxing us left right and centre to make up for it.

  7. The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda decline to give me basic assistance for a project of national and international importance that would bring in foreign revenue into the country. Billions of dollars of it.

  8. Dr Baldwin Spencer you need to take several seats in da corner. you were the worst PM Antigua ever had.we almost die of starvation.don’t open your mouth let the people forget about you as a PM. and remember you as trade Unionists it is better that way sir

  9. This article is empty. I was look for specifics. I am not sure if the specifics were omitted by the author, however, I hoped that the former PM had a credible explanation about Wadadli Power plant and the John Ashe fiasco. How about over $100M to Sandals. Extremely late payment of public servants wages and salaries; collapsing of APUA…
