Government to Expand CCTV Network to Strengthen National Security

The Antigua and Barbuda government has announced plans to expand the country’s Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) network as part of a broader strategy to enhance national security and crime prevention.

During a recent interview, Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed that the Cabinet has approved an expansion of the existing surveillance infrastructure, with additional cameras to be installed at key locations across the country.

“We need additional cameras, and the Cabinet has taken a decision to expand the network throughout the country,” Browne stated.

The move comes amid growing public concerns over crime, including the recent murder of nine-year-old Chantel Crump. The government has emphasized that improving surveillance will assist law enforcement in solving crimes more efficiently and act as a deterrent to criminal activity.

Additionally, homeowners looking to install security cameras can already benefit from duty-free concessions on surveillance equipment, a measure that has been in place for several years. Browne reaffirmed that there should be no customs-related barriers to importing security cameras for personal use.

While details of the expansion plan have yet to be fully outlined, the initiative is expected to include:

  • Additional high-definition cameras at major roadways, commercial districts, and high-crime areas.
  • Improved real-time monitoring by law enforcement agencies.
  • Integration with existing crime-fighting strategies, including forensic enhancements such as cadaver dogs and DNA analysis.

The government has also urged businesses and homeowners to complement the state’s efforts by investing in surveillance systems, further strengthening national security.

  1. What about offering duty free camera systems to private homes. Criminals may escape public cameras but get caught by private personal ones
