The government of Antigua and Barbuda is taking steps to streamline travel expenses for public officials by establishing a centralized agency to manage bookings and reduce costs.
Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office, Lionel Hurst, said the initiative aims to curb excessive spending on airline tickets, hotel stays, and per diems by replacing private travel agencies with an internal system.
“We expend a significant sum of money each year on travel,” Hurst said. “What we hope to do is instead of using travel agents that have commission built-in, we will use a government agency that is established for the purpose of arranging travel.”
Officials say the move is part of wider efforts to manage government expenditure more efficiently. Treasury data indicates that travel costs exceed $10 million annually.
“There’s going to be some experimentation, and we will determine which serves the people of Antigua and Barbuda better,” Hurst added.
The process for approving travel is also under review. Currently, the Prime Minister must personally sign off on each official’s trip, but changes may be introduced to reduce administrative bottlenecks while maintaining oversight.
“The idea is to discourage travel that might appear to be wasteful,” Hurst said. “By refining the process, we hope to ensure that funds are spent responsibly.”
The government plans to assess the effectiveness of the new system over time to determine whether it leads to meaningful cost savings.
