The government of Antigua and Barbuda has recently introduced a series of  fiscal oversight measures aimed at improving financial management and transparency.

Eight officials from key departments, including the Ministry of Finance, the Treasury, and the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), presented their monthly fiscal reports to the Cabinet.

This report covers the fiscal performance of the government for January and February 2024.

Under the new measures, all purchases of supplies or services must obtain explicit permission from the Financial Secretary.

Additionally, approval for providers of goods and services is contingent upon their clearance of statutory contributions, including Medical Benefits, Social Security, and Education Levy. Payments to approved suppliers are expected to be processed within seven days to prevent delays.

Suppliers facing payment delays will have access to a designated point of contact within the Treasury for assistance.

An Oversight Committee has been established to ensure that statutory bodies have readily available financial information.

This committee will play a crucial role in enhancing accountability and transparency across governmental entities.

The government has also announced plans to deploy additional Forensic Auditors to examine reports submitted by contractors and suppliers.

These auditors will identify any irregularities or discrepancies in financial reports, reinforcing scrutiny and integrity in financial transactions.

In addition, the Cabinet has determined that amendments to the Customs Service Act will be necessary to clarify the objectives of the new fiscal oversight policy.

These measures are aimed at improving fiscal responsibility and ensuring proper management of public funds.
