The government of Antigua and Barbuda has rejected claims that citizens face visa restrictions from the United States because of the twin-island nation’s relationship with Cuba.

Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant dismissed reports circulating on social media which suggested that Washington had sought to punish Antigua and Barbuda for its cooperation with Havana. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHAT’S APP GROUP

“Some fake news was circulating about Antigua and Barbuda being banned and visas being denied, and all sorts of blockage because of the relationship…with Cuba,” Mr Merchant said.

He confirmed that the US government had raised concerns about the use of Cuban medical personnel in the region, describing such programmes as a form of human trafficking. Antigua and Barbuda, he said, holds a different view.

The US State Department recently urged St John’s to adopt stronger safeguards for Cuban workers employed locally, particularly in the health and education sectors, amid ongoing allegations of coercion in Cuba’s overseas labour schemes.

Mr Merchant acknowledged that discussions with Washington are continuing and that “certain adjustments” will be made to reassure the US while maintaining close cooperation with Cuba.

“The Republic of Cuba remains a significant partner to Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare delivery…and also the development of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said. “But we value the relationship with the United States and therefore the United States’ concerns will be addressed.”

However, he stressed that there was “no threat” of Antiguans and Barbudans being denied US visas or of officials facing restrictions on travel.

  1. The US will keep meddling in our affairs for as long as we allow it.

If the US is so concerned then maybe they shld hire Cubans within their borders to work within their fields instead of making them take lower level jobs in order to survive. Recognize their degrees in the US

  2. That’s not saying shit if you ask me. The US wants to keep putting it’s mouth in the affairs of small island states. The US wants to dictate our prosperity and or lack thereof. CIP.CUBAN BRIGADE…it is clear that Donald Trump abf his allies are witches. They wanna control us. MAURICE knows that the US doesn’t want us to continue this program because they hate Cuba. They are trying to make their conversation very diplomatic but those of us who are not fools can read between the lines.

  3. Why do we think America is obligated to the world
We cuss them stink but want visa to go there. We encourage our children to study there and either get a job or marry an american; We go to America for birther tourism yet me cuss America. Isn’t all that ironic?

  4. Just go up to the airport and check the people coming back from the embassy, most are being denied, and those who still have valid visas and go there with their children to seek visas for them, they deny the children and revoking the parents visas. It has been happening a lot.

  5. If to take away 80 percent of the salary of the Cuban doctor. And then if he complains they remove him from the brigade. And if he stays in this because of the needs in Cuba, they brand him as a deserter and do not let him enter Cuba for 8 years. And he cannot express himself freely in his country. I do not know. Something is happening

  6. Remember what Mia told them? Revoke her passport because she don’t need to go to the US. Caricom needs to make a unified statement onbthe matter and ignore Trump and his allies from hence forth.

  7. The puppet leaders in Antigua, whether it’s ABLP or UPP will eventually do anything America demands of them. Even though America does not do shit for us. America just wants to BULLY any country that has a relationship with Cuba
