The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has called on U.S. Cable network, NewsNation, to correct false claims made in a recent broadcast that unfairly linked the country to human smuggling activities.

The report alleged that Chinese migrants were being smuggled into the U.S. from “places like the Bahamas and Antigua,” further claiming that Chinese nationals are “buying up thousands of acres of land” in both countries.

In a letter sent to NewsNation, Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the United States, Sir Ronald Sanders, strongly refuted assertions made by Senior National Correspondent Brian Entin, in the story which aired on 29 January 2025 and was posted on the network’s Facebook page.

Ambassador Sanders said : “There is no truth to the claim that Chinese nationals are buying “thousands of acres of land” in Antigua, which is only 108 square miles in size” . He also stated that the NewsNation report lacks any supporting evidence, while unjustly damaging Antigua and Barbuda’s international reputation as a premier tourism destination and a favoured location for U.S. second-home owners”.

The Ambassador further emphasized that Antigua and Barbuda is not a transit point for human smuggling or trafficking. He reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to international security, noting that “Antigua and Barbuda works closely with U.S. law enforcement agencies, regional governments through the Organization of American States (OAS), and United Nations agencies to combat human trafficking and smuggling”.

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has urged NewsNation to promptly issue a correction and remove the false statements to prevent further reputational damage. Ambassador Sanders concluded by stating: “We expect responsible journalism from media networks with wide reach and influence. It is imperative that false claims that harm the reputation of nations are swiftly corrected.”

The Embassy has requested confirmation from NewsNation that the necessary corrections will be made immediately.

  1. Ambassador Ronald Sanders is an effective communicator who always represents us well. Many of these news agencies have no respect for our Caribbean countries and find it easy to cast aspersions on the health of our small island states.
The opposition gloats in moments like these, forgetting that it’s their country too. They are sometimes responsible for disseminating this disinformation.
News Nation news to honor the ambassador’s letter of compliance immediately

  2. @ Dave Ray, just like how you labourites glote that Gaston is the PM of this country and that labour in power? When tax increase and food go up is all our country too. I hope you don’t think UPP alone will suffer and go through hard times

  3. Who don’t know, that Antigua is a #Hustlerz_Paradise!? If it ain’t so, the island would not be overrun, by other Nationalities from near and far.
Let’s put it this way, the whole of the Caribbean basin from South America and Guyana up to Cuba, on one side and Guatemala to Mexico on the other is #OPEN_KARTEL Hustling on the open seas, as North America’s demand for DRUGS is met by Our Supply Chain.
Of course, anywhere there is DRUG RUNNING, there is guns and HUEmans all in the same equation.
Ron have you ever heard of Jeffery Epstein? Wasn’t there a Connection to Antigua, allegedly, through our Windsor Palace Connections?

Antigua & Barbuda’s Borders are so tightly and heavily secured, that a herd of elephants from Africa, on a Safari Circus Tour can do a Waltz Dance, have a J’ouvert Band and still no one can seem to even have a Selfie with one of them.

Ron Sanders, please stand up, and address the Pink Elephant in the room. The Nation has a problem with smuggling, and anywhere there is smugglers, pirates and smuggling, anything goes.

One question, can the Immigration Department do a sweep and find 60% of those in the system, as temporary workers, visitors, who were let into the Nation to include those on yachts of all kind?

  4. Wow!!!! When the shoe is on the other foot it really hurts. I never thought people who make it a career destroying other people’s reputation would have a care for such behavior. Wasn’t it ABLP mouthpiece LieNuhHell Hurst who said that in political banter the aim is to destroy the opponent and scar his reputation? If that’s the aim why should anyone speaking on behalf of the ALP government feel offended if something not totally true nor totally false is printed? In 2023 over 900 hundred Africans were brought into Antigua by the government. Where are they today? Didn’t any leave the island via the front door? Step back a little further. Wasn’t Antigua implicated in a Syrian smuggling ring? Wasn’t there a cloud of suspicion on the head of the former immigration minister resulting in the American governmet requesting that he be removed as immigration minister? Sir Sir Ron, let sleeping dogs lie!!!!!!!

  5. I would have thought the Ambassador sitting in the beltway for such a long time would have a better handle on this matter. This is a non-partisan cable station that doesn’t traffics in half-truths and conspiracies.

The question is why is Antigua of interest to NewsNation? Not a good for Antigua and Barbuda given the people around the US President including the Vice Presidents amplifies falsehoods. They act of those falsehoods which could have a very bad effect on the reputation of Antigua and its economy.

News Nation purports to be a sober middle of the spectrum station but whose listeners include a lot of the freedom Caucus in the US Congress
We did not do ourselves any good when we embraced the Chinese with the and the (10) MOU with China.

The current US Government penchant for the unbelievable and the outrageous Gulf America and the taking over Canada and the Panama Canal

My guess is that this has something to do with the Newsweek article on the Chinese presence on Antigua, as well as the fact that many of the Africans that has made it to the US; now they are being deported when they get before the immigration judge, they are spilling the beans that Antigua was a transit point for them.

It would be interesting to observe how the Prime Minister handles this.

News Nation has as more influence among the freedom caucus individually as CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC. Their report is obviously erroneous. How quickly it gets killed will determine the extent of the damages.

  6. So tell me this. Why is is that the Chinese have built the biggest embassy in Antigua.
It’s a Fortress and unless they have big plans for Antigua, why would they have created such a compound?

  7. Where does Antigua get such treacherous residents from??? People who delight in attacking the reputation of the country and encourage others to do so; people who absolutely hate my beautiful homeland. As previously suggested, an inventory of these traitors should be started and made public so that they never ever gain the respect of true and loyal faithful Antiguans! Their faces should be smeared with indelible ink and their clothing drenched in their combined foul body odors so that they could be easily identified and shunned and shamed to death.

  8. Dave Ray: Were the Africans that came on Antigua Airways smuggled across the USA southern border? For they have surely disappeared out of Antigua never to be seen again. So you as a Gastonite. Tell are we,a way dem garne?

  9. That the Antigua Airways debacle was never investigated by the Gov’t says to me that there was or is some form of human trafficking going on here. Mr. PM, where are all the Africans that came here on the Antigua Airways charters? Are they still in Antigua? Asking for a friend.

  10. It seem some of y’all wants Antigua to turn into a dictatorship.
Exactly what reputation of ANU they refer to ?

The reputation of guns passing through Antigua to go to South Africa during the Apartheid era — & worst, NOT for arming the Africans enduring the brutality and oppression… OR
The reputation of the DC sniper with a fraudulently obtained Antiguan passport, and a young Jamaican immigrant as his coconspirator that killed 10 + people and injured several others?… OR
The reputation of a Ponzi scheme ran by R Allen Stanford in Antigua with the assistance of the
former head of Antigua’s FSRC…Just to name a few.

Yes, corruption happens everywhere — does that mean that the people of Antigua & Barbuda should be silenced because certain people wishes to paint a false picture of the island?

Is human smuggling occurring in Antigua… I
don’t know but, I wouldn’t categorically say YES or NO. Is it possible? Did every foreigner in Antigua enter through the legal channels?
Why can’t Antigua be honestly looked at with the naked eye instead of through political lenses?

All Antiguans should be outraged at the suggestions of those who wishes and calls for the silencing and punishing of others they disagree with. If Antiguans values their freedom, these kinds of utterances should not be taken lightly. Democracy is openly being attacked.

    Becareful what y’all wish for!
