Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda made a strong appeal at the United Nations General Assembly, calling for the immediate end of the longstanding U.S. embargo against Cuba and the removal of Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
In his address, Browne emphasized that the embargo has long outlived its purpose and now only serves to restrict Cuba’s economic development, further isolating the country from the global community.
“It is time to cast off the chains of this outdated measure, which no longer serves the interests of our modern, interconnected world,” Browne asserted. He argued that maintaining the embargo is not just an economic issue but a matter of fairness and human dignity.
Browne’s call for solidarity with Cuba reflects a growing sentiment among many small and developing nations, which believe that sanctions imposed on ideological grounds should not dictate the global order. He urged the international community to reject the practice of delegitimizing governments based on ideological differences, particularly through the use of disinformation and propaganda.
“This is not a matter of politics,” Browne declared. “It is a matter of fairness and human dignity.”
Browne’s speech echoed previous calls by Antigua and Barbuda, as well as other Caribbean nations, for the normalization of relations with Cuba. He emphasized that lifting the embargo would allow Cuba to fully participate in the global economy, fostering cooperation and mutual respect among nations.
As part of his broader message, Browne stressed the importance of embracing differences, working together for global peace and prosperity, and respecting the sovereignty of all nations. His remarks were met with applause from several delegations, particularly those aligned with the movement to lift the embargo and integrate Cuba into the international community.
The U.S. embargo against Cuba, first imposed in 1960 following the Cuban Revolution, has remained a point of contention in international relations for over six decades. Despite various efforts to ease restrictions, including steps taken during the Obama administration, the embargo remains in place, with Cuba still listed as a state sponsor of terrorism by the U.S. State Department.
Caribbean nations, including Antigua and Barbuda, have consistently called for an end to the embargo, arguing that it no longer serves its intended purpose and disproportionately affects the Cuban people.
Browne’s address at the UNGA adds to the growing chorus of voices demanding that the international community take a stand against measures that hinder economic cooperation and development.
Prime Minister Browne concluded his remarks by urging nations to move beyond outdated policies of exclusion and work together toward a future built on mutual respect.
“Let’s embrace and respect our differences, standing in solidarity with each other in defense of global peace and prosperity,” Browne said, reiterating his country’s commitment to fostering unity and cooperation within the international community.
Browne’s impassioned plea places Antigua and Barbuda at the forefront of advocacy for Cuba’s economic and political reintegration, aligning with the country’s longstanding efforts to promote justice and equity on the global stage.

With SANCTIONS imposed on RUSSIA the PROCEEDS from the SALE OF ALFA NERO needs to be REPATRIATED to the U.S GOVERNMENT TREASURY NOT ANTIGUA to REBUILD UKRAINE when the WAR IS OVER.
My PM not even the majority of Us in Antigua and Barbuda who are living paycheck to paycheck understand or even care as to what is happening between America and Cuba. We are more concerned with our own high cost of living and price gouging by your friends who own these Mega Marts. You are like a fallen tree in the jungle of the super rich and they could give a damn about what you’re shouting. It’s falling on deaf ears.
That will never be when white hegemony is propagated by Gaston over in Barbuda lands, once you keep strengthening white monopoly capital domination, these embargo will never end, it’s we who give the USA economic power to call embargo and power over our resources, the more you give away our lands to white people the more powerful the embargo become.
Well said ABLP GUTTER SNIPE.
@Islander: It’s known that truth and reality walk together as companions, but they’re very distinctive from each other. My PM Gaston Browne’s present reality is not our present truth.
I’m some what surprise that the Prime Minister didn’t mention Venezuela in his speech at the UN. But these calls by mainly Caribbean Islands to lift the decades long embargo against Cuba. An embargo that the whole word have called to be illegal and unjust, will fall on deaf ears in Washington. America does what it wants, and the hell with the rest of the world. As long as the world power doesn’t shift and remains in the hands of the USA, they will determine who can trade and who can’t. In order words, they decide who can eat. Because every country needs to trade to be able to take care of their needs. Whether it is medical supplies or simply food stuff. Countries trade with each other in order to achieve this. And it is the people in the country that suffer and they hope from Washington is that suffering people will sooner or later stand up against their government.

Do you think that each country in the world should be a democracy? If so why not call on all non-democratic countries leaders to step down and hold elections. Such as China, Saudi Arabia, and many of those kingdoms in the middle east. But I always wonder why people think democracy as we know it here is the most freest in the world. When Nelson Mandela became a free man he fought for the system of one man one vote. But the white people that were in minority and rule over the back people for hundreds of years refused that system. The great America doesn’t practice one man one vote either, they have what is called and Electoral College.https://bipartisanpolicy.org/explainer/the-electoral-college-simplified/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9eO3BhBNEiwAoc0-jX1IlrZytoqqqnTgPOF-QMEq3xt3yFie60PHkcAT0iXB0NcgrInScBoCWroQAvD_BwE
That is why we saw in the 2016 election Donald Trump coming to power with 304 votes vs Hilary Clinton 227 votes. But when one looks at the number of people that voted for Clinton she far outplayed Donald Trump. She had 2.9 million more votes than Trump. Can anyone call that system of democracy fair? I beg to differ. Now the USA makes a lot of noise when other countries have election and the same thing happens. In a communist system people do vote. But they do not vote for the leader. The President. They vote for member to sit in the assembly. And those elected member have voting rights to vote for the President and other members. Therefore it is a form of democracy. In a Kingdom, people have no right to vote. At least not in Kingdoms like Saudi Arabia. Kingdoms such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium, the King has in fact no political power. They are more figureheads. And then we have the worst of them all, “Dictators”. Those are people that grab power by force and rule with an iron fist. We saw them a lot in South America, and strange enough they were supported by the very same United States of America. All because they allowed Washington to use their wealth with out any problem whatsoever.
Venezuela had elections just the other day. It was a fiercely contested election. And the results were very close. But like with everything the losers will not accept they loss and that will lead to more instability for Venezuela. https://youtu.be/OMg8mMF7apM?si=KGUvFpiNL2C1fInn
This is the Venezuela you won’t see on the American TV.
Election observers of Caricom where invited and so were other observers. But of course if America is not invited then the election could not have been fair. When have election observers ever been invited to monitor the US election. Because we know what happened four years ago. Donald Trump never admitted losing the election. He and his supporters still claim that the election was stolen from him. And we saw live on ALL TV Stations how the Politicians narrowly escape with their live from the angry mob. That is America. The leader of Democracy in the world, fighting the save their own democracy. China a system of communism is not been condemned by the USA for being a communist state, but for not opening their market enough to US goods. So in fact it is all about the money. And strange enough in these days, China is leading the world when it comes to creating wealth. China creates more millionaires than any other country in the world. But this is still very much concentrated in certain industries. Will they one day embrace democracy as their political system since after all they have party embraced Capitalism.
Venezuela with the largest oil fields in the world, could be the richest country on earth, however they must play by the rules of Washington. If not, they will live with all that wealth and still being poor. Because Washington makes the rules to let people suffer.

Just in case you haven’t listen to Mia Mottley’s speech, no that she also called on the US to stop this unfair and unjust embargo against Cuba by the USA for over sixty years now. Are you going to tell her the same thing you told Gaston Browne you Prime Minister?
STAY AT THE HEAD OF THE CLASS PM BROWNE…… YOUR ADVOCACY FOR CUBA CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THAT you are sincere humanitarian by nature.
The embargo is definitely long overdue. It is gross wickedness to mankind.
