Cabinet Approves Surveillance Cameras for All Public Schools
The government has approved the immediate installation and upgrading of surveillance camera systems across all national public schools, in response to a series of recent break-ins and security breaches at educational facilities.
According to Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant, the Cabinet has allocated funding for the procurement and installation of the systems, which are part of a broader effort to enhance safety and protect school property.
Merchant said the initiative “forms part of the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing safety and security within the education sector, ensuring that students and school property are better protected.”
The project will be overseen by the Ministry of Education, with installation expected to begin immediately. It follows several reported incidents of vandalism and theft at public schools, prompting calls from educators and parents for stronger security infrastructure.
The new system is expected to provide real-time monitoring and recording capabilities, helping authorities deter intrusions and respond more quickly to potential threats.
Officials say the surveillance initiative complements wider investments in education, including facility upgrades and the introduction of technology-driven learning environments aimed at improving both safety and academic performance.

Surveillance cameras only make sense if the cameras are monitored 24/7. Let’s suppose that there is a violent incident in the school. How do cameras prevent that? And when the criminals break in at night, they usually have their faces covered. Everyone is running to cameras now like if that will solve crime.
And we all know that nothing will be monitored or maintained. So more money wasted and someone gets a kick back on the purchase.
To prevent crime, alarms are required. For security during school hours, human security, properly trained guards or officers are required. And they should be rotated so they don’t get too comfortable and familiar.
