Antigua and Barbuda Boosts Investment in Education, Healthcare, and Sustainable Development
The government of Antigua and Barbuda is set to make transformative investments in education, healthcare, and sustainable development in 2025, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced in his New Year’s address. These initiatives aim to enhance public services, empower citizens, and position the nation for long-term growth.
A $200 million investment has been allocated to expand the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus, creating new opportunities for higher education. Browne emphasized the importance of fostering a knowledge-based society to ensure global competitiveness and sustainable development.
“This investment will create additional opportunities for higher education, critical to our nation’s development,” he said.
The government plans to expand healthcare services with the establishment of a cardiac unit and a specialized renal transplant facility. In addition, the Cancer Centre will be re-equipped and reopened, providing access to new cancer treatments and therapies.
“These advancements in healthcare reflect our commitment to improving the quality of life for all our people,” Browne stated.
Stem cell therapies and other cutting-edge medical treatments will also be expanded, further modernizing the country’s healthcare offerings.
Sustainable Land Development
Sustainable development policies will focus on providing more land for housing and tourism-related projects. Locals will have access to beachfront and waterfront lots for constructing Airbnb properties, small hotels, and marinas. Key areas identified for development include Pensioners Beach, Willoughby Bay, Shell Beach, Jolly Beach, and Goat Island in Barbuda.
“These opportunities are designed to expand domestic ownership in the hospitality sector and promote robust growth through local direct investments,” Browne said.
The government also plans to develop an 18-hole golf course on 200 acres of coastal land in Barbuda, offering locals the chance to participate in this major project.
Supporting Entrepreneurship
To support these initiatives, the entrepreneurial fund will be scaled up, providing financial assistance to individuals and businesses. Browne encouraged citizens to seize these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to participate in national development.
“This administration takes pride in creating policies that empower all citizens,” he said, urging residents to embrace the opportunities ahead.
These investments, according to Browne, are part of the government’s broader vision for a resilient, harmonious, and prosperous Antigua and Barbuda.

You know All these long winded plans are well and good but hear dis we need an accountability of how you spend last year’s money and wa you ministers a go do wid wa them get this year. A just bluf after bluf after bluf right now.
Roads, water, you know the daily necessities, education just go give hard tone man like Lamin free scholarship when dem have all dem paychecks?
Antigua capital needs to be uplifted. There needs to be a clear development plan for St.John’s . Since we are already loaded or over loaded with tourists, we need a short term plan .
With immediate effect the repairs of the broken and dangerous side walks, pot holes and get rid of the stench , especially in lower market street.
Then the abandoned building all over St. John’s needs to be acquired by government. We need to put a proper team in place to deal with the long term planning and future development. Not just DCA to be approving construction of buildings but the oversight body has to be involved.
We need to have increased security in and around St.John’s. It’s not safe for the tourists that just wants to explore the city. I have been on cruise I have explored the city and was in absolutely no danger. So until we get rid of all those abandoned buildings- let’s have safe zones, and even private security on patrol when we have several ships in port.
They the most serious investment must be road construction. Our main roads from St.John’s to England Harbour is a disaster. Although major work has been done on factory road and south road . The connecting roads are very bad. Like the Bethesda Rosd , Jonas road , American road , factory through light foot- Sea view farm to Clark’s hill. That road joining Factory road to All Saints Road through Potters / Veg road. So with the increase in visitor arrivals, tours to Shirley hight and England Harbour are we going air lift or continue to use those deplorable roads .
While we are on roads , the person that is charge is incompetent to the lowest degree. Talking about the Director of PWD. We just cannot continue with him at the head of this very important area of our country development. He definitely lacks the capacity and capability.
I am also very concerned about the way CO Williams has been working. Even the layman can see that they are operating like headless chickens.
We need far better and more professional road construction company – CO William isn’t much better than PWD.
I meant to say that I have been on cruises and have walked around Cities outside of St.John’s and never felt unsafe. Even as an Antiguan there are areas in St.John’s. Little St.John’s that my life feels threatened and very unsafe.
The parham clinic needs to be better equipped I don’t even call it a clinic nothing is there to aid the people please we need help
