Source: MorrocoWorldNews: Antigua and Barbuda has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a potential solution to the long-standing dispute over Western Sahara.
Ambassador Walton Alfonso Webson, Antigua and Barbuda’s permanent representative at the United Nations, spoke at the regular session of the UN Committee of 24 (C24) this week.
Webson emphasized that the Moroccan autonomy plan “complies with international law, the United Nations Charter and the resolutions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly.”
The statement comes amidst renewed efforts by the UN to restart roundtable talks involving Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front. Webson expressed Antigua and Barbuda’s support for this political process led by the UN Secretary-General.
The Caribbean diplomat also welcomed the participation of representatives from the Western Sahara in UN discussions, hailing the “dynamic socio-economic development underway” in the region.
However, Webson urged all parties to remain committed to the ceasefire and cooperate with the UN peacekeeping mission, MINURSO. He called on parties who have obstructed MINURSO’s freedom of movement to cease such actions, emphasizing the importance of regional security and stability.
Antigua and Barbuda’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan adds to a growing chorus of international backing for the proposal.
Implementing the plan would grant Western Sahara a degree of self-governance within Moroccan sovereignty.
However, the Polisario Front has rejected the plan, insisting on a self-determination referendum that is widely and increasingly viewed as unrealistic and unworkable.
