Cabinet Approves Commissioning of Warri Boards for Schools Under National Cultural Heritage Initiative

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved the commissioning of one hundred and sixty-eight (168) Warri boards for distribution to schools across the country, as part of the Government’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage Initiative.

This decision underscores the Government’s ongoing commitment to preserving, promoting, and institutionalizing Antigua and Barbuda’s rich cultural heritage, while simultaneously enhancing educational outcomes for students.

Warri, a traditional African-derived board game deeply rooted in Caribbean history, forms an integral part of the nation’s cultural identity. Its introduction into schools is intended to foster greater cultural awareness and appreciation among students, encourage intergenerational knowledge transfer, and support cognitive development through strategic gameplay.

The initiative will see Warri integrated into the formal education system, helping to reinforce critical thinking, numeracy skills, and strategic planning among young learners. Cabinet also noted that the nationwide distribution of the boards will ensure equitable access for students across Antigua and Barbuda.

In addition to its cultural and educational benefits, the programme will provide a boost to the local economy. The production of the Warri boards will engage local artisans, supporting craftsmanship and promoting the creative industries sector.

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Creative Industries will oversee the implementation and distribution process, ensuring that schools nationwide benefit from this important cultural and educational initiative.

This investment reflects the Government’s dedication to safeguarding national traditions while equipping students with valuable skills, ensuring that Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural legacy continues to thrive for generations to come.

  1. Question to you Mr. PM. Where these Warri Boards made in Antigua and Barbuda or imported like almost everything else.
Making Warri Boards should be perhaps a government workshop thing. And the Antiguan LOGO needs to be on it so that tourists can buy them as souvenirs from Antigua and Barbuda. And since we have a World Champion here we should have them signed by him or with his picture. A small booklet should be sold with them explaining the rules of the game and how old the game really is. The same we should do with pan.
Why should Trinidad alone be known for pans while our own Khan Cordice who is the Director of Culture has gone to Trinidad and won Panorama two years on a row now. It is sad that we really do not like to recognize our own home boys when they have fame abroad.
