The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a nationwide street and community lighting improvement programme after a Cabinet briefing by the Electricity Manager of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).

Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, said the official was invited to address concerns about inadequate lighting in several communities.

Cabinet reviewed conditions in residential areas, major roads and public spaces, identifying locations requiring urgent attention to improve visibility and public safety.

APUA has committed to carrying out repairs and upgrades, saying it has the technical capacity and equipment to complete the work within a reasonable timeframe.

The programme will include installing new streetlights, repairing faulty units, replacing damaged fixtures and upgrading systems where necessary. Priority will be given to areas with the most severe deficiencies.

The government said improved lighting is expected to strengthen road safety, support crime prevention and contribute to national security and community development.

  1. That electricity manager as he like to be called , but doesn’t possess the metal.
One simple cost saving method to the tax payers and the APUA is to get the LED streetlight repair by electronic components diagnosis and replacement, those LED lights never really die, they just merely need perhaps bridge rectifier or resistor and diode replacements. So to procure new streetlights and dash those aside is an environmental travesty, and as I did mention the Solar powered streetlight batteries should be relocated to the top of the pole out of reach to prevent them from been vandalized, and use the helix augur anchors mounting system for the light poles instead of using concrete base foundation that is costly, and the solar panel has to be removed during storms or APUA will be experiencing the same list that occurred in the pass.

  2. @juju bee: it is I who had been advocating for solar powered streetlight with camera combination out of china to replace all existing streetlights system and help the police and government solve crimes.
