Antigua and Barbuda Appoints New Director of Public Prosecutions

Antigua and Barbuda has appointed a new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), ending a vacancy that lasted over a year.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin confirmed the selection but said the appointee’s identity would remain confidential until they officially take office in May.

“He is vastly experienced in criminal law and has prosecuted cases across the Caribbean, Canada, and beyond,” Sir Steadroy told Observer Media, expressing confidence the appointment would restore the DPP’s office to full strength.

The post has been vacant since 2023, following the departure of Anthony Armstrong. Shannon Jones-Gittens has been acting in the role during the interim.

  1. @ Anonymous, u clearly since you took the time to write nonsense. On a positive note, let’s hope the new head of prosecution will serve with dignity and honesty

  2. This government is all about secrecy. It is our business, so why can’t we know until you feel like feeding us with whatever you want, whenever you choose to do so? You are so accustomed to your hanky panky that you think that this is one of those times. Do you wish to be reminded where this kind of secrecy has taken us?

  3. I hope this is not another none native born of Antigua and Barbuda. A Barbudan is acting in the position right now, so why not give her the permanent role. Are the government saying that native born are incompetent for such position?

  4. The government see how secrecy almost damage the image of the country and they still going that road again. If you don’t want to publish his or her name, remain quiet and say nothing. Announcing that there will be a new DPP and not saying who the person is, is pure SH.T When the Alfa Nero controversy came out, that was the time the government trying to make things public. Don’t get me wrong, am not advocating anything was wrong with the Alfa Nero. All I am saying come clean at all times. Let us know who the DPP is or zip it.

  5. Not releasing the name sounds like you are anticipating a lot of backlash, just hope it’s not another lackey, the Lickspittle Brigade will not give a damn but the rest of us do

  6. So someone has been acting in the position for two years and not getting the job…if this isn’t wickedness I don’t know what is. WICKEDNESS ME SAY, PURE WICKEDNESS PLUS ADVANTAGE

  7. Can you imagine? The people of Antigua and Barbuda give this bloody joker a job, Cutie you work for us we are your bosses yet you jump up on your high horse and decide to keep secrets from us, we demand to know who was chosen, you are not only a jackass but a bloody mule

  8. @ DION Pelle: Move to the head of the class.. Don’t worry, the stone the builder rejects will some day become the head corner stone

  9. The DPP in St Kitts is from Antigua. They did not want to give him the opportunity in Antigua and St.Kitts scoop him up.Antiguans have no honor in their own country.

  10. Honestly speaking, do you all think ALP should ever be selecting a DPP? A crime boss with passport fraud to answer announcing it. Remember Anthony Armstrong was their pet to pursue the bus case against UPP, until karma got him in Jamaica prison? Our own Adlai Smith was rejected for his integrity and uprightness, he doing a good job on st Kitts today. This new DPP character name has been kept from us because he must be tainted or colleagues of ALP.
