Antigua and Barbuda Applauds U.S. Decision to Remove Cuba from Terror List

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has welcomed the decision by the outgoing U.S. President to remove Cuba from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. The government expressed gratitude for the move, noting that Antigua and Barbuda has consistently championed this objective since the designation was imposed. Joining with Cuba, the nation celebrates what it calls a significant diplomatic victory.

Cuba was initially added to the U.S. list of State Sponsors of Terrorism in 1982, accused of supporting revolutionary movements and harboring guerrilla groups. While the Obama administration removed the designation in 2015 as part of a broader normalization effort, it was reinstated by the Trump administration in 2021, citing concerns over terrorism and fugitives allegedly harbored by Cuba.

The Biden administration’s recent decision comes as part of a Vatican-mediated agreement, including the release of hundreds of prisoners detained during Cuba’s 2021 protests. A senior U.S. official explained that an assessment found no basis for the designation, marking a shift towards engagement with Cuba.

Antigua and Barbuda, a longstanding advocate for improved Caribbean relations, views the removal as a step toward strengthening regional diplomacy and economic cooperation. The Cabinet’s statement underscores the shared pride of Caribbean nations in celebrating this achievement alongside Cuba.

  1. What a joke! Biden could have done this three years ago, yet he waited until the last minute, knowing full well that within a few weeks Trump and Marco Rubio who’s parents ran from Cuba in the 50’s will simply reverse this.

  2. On his way out he is finally doing some things right. One may say a little too late and Trump can reverse this at a moments notice. I remember Barak Obama also have removed certain sanctions from Cuba , but Trump put them all back.
What I am still waiting for Biden to do is to exonerate the grate Black Leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey. A group of black leaders had send him a petition to do so. I would be very disappointed if he doesn’t do so. Afterall he owes the Black Community his presidency.
