Financial Secretary Rasona Davis-Crump disclosed that the proposed two percent hike in the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) aims to generate around EC$50 million, contributing to the government’s target of raising the Gross Domestic Product to 25 percent.

This increase, the first since ABST’s inception in 2007, was affirmed by Davis-Crump on state television.

The Ministry of Finance suggests a 17 percent overall increment, featuring a luxury property tax rise from 0.3 to 0.5 percent in 2024, scrutiny of tax incentives, and public sector cost-cutting.

The tourism industry’s ABST rate, presently at 14 percent, is slated to align with other sectors, except for zero-rated items.

Davis-Crump advocates for incentives to start-ups, proposing limits once operations commence.

The government, however, dismisses reintroducing Personal Income Tax, abolished in 2016.

  1. On behalf of the grass-root, everyday Antiguans we would like to say we don’t give a F@#$!!!!!!.. that’s all y’all can do sell dreams. we don’t care about your money cause we don’t see or feel it… Y’all sick our stomach with these pie in the sky articles both you and politicians. No water, no better life, nasty stinky city, greedy government no infrastructure. So again go f$#@ y’all selves and your bullshit stories!!!!. And to any red or blue supporters that goes for you too we hate both y’all parties!!!! Usefull idiots!!!!

  2. The PIT was bringing in about that amount. You Gaston discontinued it, now you are raising ABST by 2 percent from 15 percent to 17 percent.

  3. I do not believe taxes for a very small island is the first and best way to increase government revenue. Taxing the common man is not the way and many other ideas exist but this is what you get when you have leaders and a public who frowns on innovation, and creativity.

They will have to deal with the expenses in Antigua and Barbuda. I give up on helping.

  4. Meanwhile, 20k a week continues to be poured into the ocean in support of the boondoggle cash grab known as Alpha Nero. Millions more are are squandered monthly in a futile neverending attempt to make LIATs dilapidated aircraft defy gravity. All these things are doomed to failure. More millions have been consigned to the trash heap in the shape of prefabricated housing which now litters the landscape for all to see.
Gaston’s solution to his own endless record of financial disasters is to pile ever higher taxes onto the long suffering Antiguan taxpayer. How much longer will they remain complacent as banker Browne dips his greedy grubby hands into their collective wallets.

  5. that compounded tax with a multiplier effect will only boost inflation. erode spending power and increase poverty levels of an already highly unemployed & under- employed population under serious post pandemic critical stress.

  6. If was Harold Lovell you woulda argue him to the ground and refuse to put on the 2%, and even come out to the public to say so.

But try that with Gaston, you don’t dare. You don’t believe in the tax but you can’t say so. You have to come out in Point Express and say yes. You all fraid him like rat fraid cat.
Lovell give you all to much liberty and all yuh stab he inna he back.
