Smoking-Related Deaths in CARICOM: Outperforming Global Averages
In 1990, smoking posed a significant health threat from a global perspective. By 2021, the global smoking-related death rate had dropped from 126 to 73 deaths per 100,000 people, while the Latin America and Caribbean region saw a similar decline from 85 to 37.
CARICOM nations have followed suit, trending slightly below the LAC average and, favourably, largely below the global average.
Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis achieved notable reductions, with Barbados lowering its rate from 35 to 20—the region’s lowest in 2021.
On the other hand, Guyana and Suriname, despite progress, recorded death rates of 38 and 43, respectively, among the highest in CARICOM.
These disparities highlight the varied success of anti-smoking efforts across the region.
The data tells a story of progress, but also highlights that the region has performed much better than the global average dating all the way back to 1990.

We now have a bigger problem that far outweighed the deaths from cigarette smoking. By the cigarette was cigarette or tobacco mentioned in the article? so I am assuming it’s cigarettes/ tobacco they are talking about here. We have another group of addictive smokers. They are cannabis smokers. Throughout the Caribbean including Antigua we have a number of young people that are mentally deranged due to smoking of Cannabis and other drugs. Since the government of Antigua decriminalized the smoking of cannabis, our young men in particular became less law abiding and disrespectful. The lawlessness led to more criminal behaviors and proliferation of firearms. Where you have drugs you have guns , where you have guns you have crimes. Passing legislation to now prevent them from smoking in public places after allowing it to go unchecked for a decade- The horse has not just bolted but was given a free rein. So you are now passing laws to criminalize smoking in public. It was government doing that had lead to this breakdown. It’s all the yes men and woman that sit in Cabinet that allowed this to happen. Now our young people, school age at that are mixing cannabis with other very dangerous drugs as expressed by the local health officials. This has impacted negatively from an economic, social and educational standpoints.
Those that were given licenses to grow and sell cannabis for medical purposes have been selling cannabis locally and it’s now easily available to our school children. . Look at the gathering and the structures constructed near the police station on Peres Road . Look at the amount of young men looking like Zumbeezes walking our streets. The Ras freeman group is only growing cannabis to sell to our people. Children are now smoking and pushing cannabis at our school. Our teachers and children are at risk because of this out of control cannabis/ drug smoking population. It is a fact that most of the delinquent and violent school children are cannabis smokers. This problem was not created by the police. However, the police is blamed, criticized for not having this under control. A uncontrollable problem created by this government. Now the police is being asked to change, arrest and bring before the court, which could lead to imprisonment. This out of control public smoking situations, I repeat created by the government.
You can see these young people are not attracted to agriculture from a food security standpoint. However as soon as the licenses were issued they gathered up to ensure that cannabis security.
The countries that take the smoking of marijuana and any other substance seriously, their economies are doing well, their education system are excellent , they don’t face all these addiction mental health issues and crime is under control.

Smoking Marijuana is dangerous. It affects the lungs and damages the brains, especially the underdeveloped. No form of smoking is good. No form of inhalation of smoke into the lungs is good – be it cigarette/tobacco, marijuana, industrial smoke, bush fire. Smoke inhalation kills by itself, much less to the other negative effects.
