Staff from the Dominica Mountain Chicken Project have found its first wild surviving mountain chicken frog, since the passage of Hurricane Maria in late September.<\/p>

The juvenile frog was seen Monday night, while the team was carrying out its weekly field visit. The team was surveying 21 sites around Dominica.<\/p>\n

In late November, the group received an official curfew pass, which gave members permission to conduct field monitoring at night.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

This discovery is particularly important since no frogs were heard or seen, after the hurricane, except for isolated cases where people said they had heard frogs calling out shortly after the storm.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

But it is now more difficult to find these amphibians since the breeding season closed in September. The frogs have stopped croaking.<\/p>\n

The Mountain Chicken Frog, once Dominica\u2019s national dish, is one of the world\u2019s most threatened frogs.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

According to http:\/\/www.arkive.org \u2013 a UK-based charity focused on promoting conservation of wildlife, the oddly-named mountain chicken (Leptodactylus fallax) is so called because its meat is said to taste like chicken.<\/p>\n

This species is also one of the largest frogs in the world, with adult females growing up to remarkable lengths of 21 centimetres.<\/p>
