Prime Minister Gaston Browne says there is a need for new legislation that would protect those who raise alarm against corruption.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Whistleblower Protection Act may potentially be implemented for the first time in Antigua and Barbuda sometime during 2020.<\/p>\n

Using the lack of a legal pursuit of members of the former UPP administration who he alleged: \u201cplundered the country\u201d as an example, Browne expressed that this would be the right move for the nation.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cWe have to now look seriously at some form of whistleblower protection. That is a matter that I will have to discuss seriously with my colleagues and try and convince them that we will need to go that route,\u201d said Browne<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The law would apply to whistleblowers who work for the government and would allow them to report on the possible existence of anything from breaking the law to wasting funds or abuse of authority.<\/p>\n

For example in other countries like the US, a federal agency violates the Whistleblower Protection Act if agency authorities take, or threaten to take, retaliatory action against any employee or applicant who discloses such information.<\/p>
