PRIME MINISTER FREUNDEL STUART has been asked to take down the controversial statue of Lord Nelson in the heart of Bridgetown.<\/p>

The formal request for the removal of the monument, which has occupied a prime position in The City since 1813, is contained in a resolution presented to CARICOM Heads of Government by the CARICOM Reparations Commission, headed by prominent historian and academic Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.<\/p>\n

Stuart is chairman of the CARICOM Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on Reparations for Native Genocide and Slavery.<\/p>

In a telephone interview, Sir Hilary told the\u00a0DAILY<\/strong>\u00a0NATION<\/strong>\u00a0the commission met on October 17 and resolved that formal requests be made to all CARICOM member states calling for \u201call statues and memorials dedicated to the public reverence of persons committed to crimes against humanity, and all those who aided and abetted them, to be removed from places of public celebration\u201d.<\/p>
