Hormonal and copper IUDs<\/span><\/h2>\n

Before getting into the details of Paragards, it is important to know first the difference between the types of IUDs. Mainly, there are two: hormonal and copper IUDs. Hormonal IUDs release small amounts of a hormone called Progestin into your body throughout the years it is inserted there. This hormone thickens the mucus in your cervix; thus, it prevents sperm from making their way to the egg. This will prevent the fertilization process from taking place. Unlike hormonal IUDs, copper IUDs like Paragard work in a completely different way.<\/span><\/p>

It consists of a copper wire coiled around the base of the device; the copper will change the chemical environment of your uterus so it will prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Having a broken Paragard inside the uterus can cause infections, scarring, internal bleeding and may even lead to a gruesome hysterectomy.
