The government is presently working on an agreement for concessions and others benefits which will go to the Sunwing group in order to facilitate the refurbishment and construction of two hotels in Antigua.<\/p>

The Cabinet reviewed a draft contract on Wednesday and will make changes to be submitted to Sunwing by Friday morning. Cabinet notes did not share details of the concessions at this time.<\/p>\n

The Sunwing group, which owns a tour operator company, an airline, and hotels, bought the former Royal Antigua Hotel, which it will refurbish, and also acquired nearby lands to construct a second hotel.<\/p>

The hotel conglomerate has also taken over the management of the Jolly Beach Hotel and has indicated an interest in another hotel in Antigua that may be up for sale.<\/p>

In order to keep all of these hotels full, the Sunwing group began flying its own airline into VC Bird International from Montreal, starting last Sunday, November 26, 2017.<\/p>\n

The Cabinet visited the Royal Antigua property, which was acquired by Sunwing for $27 million.<\/p>

“All 300 rooms in the nine-storied building have been stripped down and are being reconstructed to a new standard,” Cabinet minutes said.<\/p>\n

“The lobby and several restaurants are being completely reconstructed; the pools and the over-the-water restaurant are also being completely rebuilt.”<\/p>

The Sunwing Corporation plans to bring 60,000 guests to the former Royal Antigua each year; it plans to be ready to receive its first guests by November 2018.<\/p>

“More than 350 permanent jobs will be created there when the hotel is complete,” the government promised.<\/p>\n
