The family of legendary\u00a0Antiguan Calypsonian Rupert “Mighty Swallow” Philo are reaching out to the public to assist with the cost of his medical care.<\/p>

Philo was hospitalised in New York in August for what has been described as several “serious health issues.”<\/p>\n

Franklyn T Grant Jr, has set up an online donation account<\/a>\u00a0on the popular GoFundMe website\u00a0with a goal to raise US$111,700 on behalf of Philo.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“I am appealing to you guys and gals, friends, family and strangers as well, for your financial assistance. The Medical bill is accumulating and\u00a0the day-to-day finances have been depleted. I am forced to seek your help so\u00a0he can survive in this foreign city. None of us\u00a0expected\u00a0his health to deteriorate so quickly,” Grant Jr wrote.<\/p>

“At the present time, he is under extensive doctor\u2019s care. It will take an extended period for\u00a0him to recuperate. Although,\u00a0he is\u00a0discharged he’s still not out of the woods,” Grant Jr wrote.<\/p>\n

Philo is reportedly living in an apartment on Fulton Street, rent-free, courtesy of Rawlston Charles.<\/p>\n

“Due to the amount of time, he\u00a0has to stay for medical attention through the winter days, the living accommodations need to be altered and\/or updated,” Grant Jr said.<\/p>\n

History<\/strong><\/p>\n

To date, King Swallow has reigned as the Caribbean Calypso King, and is the recipient of three Sunshine Awards. He has also received national honours in Trinidad & Tobago and Grenada.<\/p>\n

Here at home, he has been awarded Grand Cross of the Most Princely Heritage.<\/p>\n

King Swallow still holds the distinction of being the first calypsonian to grace the stage at Radio City Music Hall.<\/p>\n

King Swallow also established and managed the oldest calypso tent, the Calypso Pepper Pot dubbed the University of Calypso.<\/p>\n
