The government of Grenada is calling on the international community to make good on commitments to assist Small Island Developing States to meet renewable energy targets.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Grenada\u2019s Energy Minister\u00a0Gregory Bowen spoke frankly as he addressed a high-level ministerial meeting on Small Island Developing States on Friday, during the\u00a0Tenth Session\u00a0of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly.<\/p>\n

Bowen said it was his duty to point out the \u201chindrances that we face,\u201d making reference to Grenada and other states in the Caribbean Community.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/div>\n

He said further investment in renewable energy requires noting the economic burden on the various small island states, particularly in respect of the price of energy.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThe price of energy to our respective populations, domestic and commercial, must be lower than what it is,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

But the minister said this cannot be achieved if promises are made to SIDS and are not kept.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThe big sums promised by the developing countries, we have seen where it\u2019s going, it\u2019s not being collected and it\u2019s not being paid,\u201d Bowen told the IRENA Assembly.<\/p>\n

He said it\u2019s a matter that he\u2019s already raised with the international agencies and states, which he did not name.<\/p>

\u201cAt the levels of the small island states we\u2019ve confronted the powers that be and it\u2019s still continuing,\u201d Bowen said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cI am hoping that the learned members of the platform will take heed to this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grenada has set long term targets to achieve 100 per cent renewable energy and Bowen said this is possible through investments in geothermal energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever the expenses in investment [are] significantly high [and].storage will an added cost,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
