In 2020, 4.6 million Haitians, about 40% of the total population, will require urgent humanitarian assistance in which over 57% of them are women and 45.5% are children.<\/div>\n

OCHA\u00a0reports that deteriorating economic conditions\u00a0this year\u2014including\u00a0low growth rate, high inflation and an increase in the cost of basic food items\u2014have had a negative impact on the humanitarian situation in the Caribbean nation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
At the same time, insecurity and social tensions\u00a0meant aid workers had\u00a0limited access to a large part of the country.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As a result, the number of Haitians facing food insecurity rose\u00a0to 3.7 million this year, up\u00a0from 2.6 million\u00a0in\u00a02018.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
OCHA expects the figure will reach 4.2 million by March, with\u00a0some\u00a01.2 million\u00a0Haitians\u00a0likely to experience \u201cemergency levels\u201d of food insecurity.<\/div>\n
\u201cThe situation is expected to remain unstable in the coming months, which will further weaken the country\u2019s economy and, consequently, the ability of the poorest Haitians to meet their basic needs as well as the capacity of the State to provide essential services,\u201d the agency\u00a0said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
OCHA and its partners supported 455,000 people in Haiti during the first nine months of the\u00a0year.<\/div>\n
However, lack of funding\u00a0prevented them from reaching even more.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A $126 million\u00a0humanitarian plan\u00a0for Haiti, launched in February, was only 32 per cent funded:\u00a0among the\u00a0lowest in the world, according to OCHA.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Humanitarians are seeking $252 million to support\u00a0more than two\u00a0million people in Haiti\u00a0in 2020.<\/div>\n
Overall, 4.6 million citizens, or around 40 per cent of the population,\u00a0mainly women and children,\u00a0will require urgent assistance.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
