\u201cThe links between the United States and Antigua and Barbuda are long, strong and enduring\u201d.<\/p>

This statement was made yesterday by Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Ambassador to the United States, Sir Ronald Sanders, at a Church Service in Washington DC, marking the 36th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Independence.<\/p>\n

Speaking to an audience of the Antigua and Barbuda diaspora and diplomatic representatives of other nations, Sir Ronald observed that the links between the two countries \u201cexisted before the independence of the United States from Britain in 1776\u201d.\u00a0 He said, \u201cAntigua always was, and remains today, a strong trading partner with the US\u201d.<\/p>

The Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador explained that \u201cEvidence of the commitment to those trade links was Antigua\u2019s resistance to British Navigation Acts that sought to punish the United States after 1776 by prohibiting trade with its colonies in the Caribbean\u201d.<\/p>

He pointed out that, \u201cbetween 1784 and 1787, it took Horatio Nelson and a fleet of British military ships to enforce Antigua\u2019s refusal to comply with the trade embargo against the newly-independent United States of America\u201d, and he recalled that \u201cNelson is recorded as saying that the Antiguan Colonists are as great rebels as ever were in America, had they the power to show it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ambassador Sanders said that \u201clike many other nations in the Caribbean, Antigua\u2019s desire for independence was inspired by the United American States. The noble ideas, expounded by Thomas Jefferson and John Dickinson in 1775, resounded across those many centuries\u201d, including that Americans were \u201cresolved to die freemen rather than to live as slaves.\u201d<\/p>

He said that \u201cit is no passing coincidence that 36 years ago, the framers of the Independence Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda, laid down similar principles to those set out in the US Declaration of Independence, especially that all men are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Declaring that the harmful effects of Climate Change is now the biggest threat to the independence and existence of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Ronald told the audience \u201cthis is why Antigua and Barbuda has to be in the forefront of the battle against Climate Change\u201d.<\/p>

Remarking on the harmful effects of hurricanes, he said, \u201cWe may be bowed, but we are not beaten. We were knocked-down many times and still we stood up every time\u201d.<\/p>

Telling the audience that the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda \u201cintend to continue to rise\u201d, he said that \u201cwe will stretch our hands to our sisters and brothers in this US diaspora so that we might lift-up ourselves together, because in the words of the old spiritual, \u201cWe all got a right to the tree of life\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Church service, celebrating Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s 36th<\/sup>\u00a0Independence anniversary on November 1st<\/sup>, was held at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church.<\/p>\n
