Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, His Excellency Mr. Walton Alfonso Webson, and Her Excellency Mrs. Valentine Rugwabiza, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Rwanda\u00a0 took steps in the deepening of the relationship between both countries by signing a Joint Communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations.<\/p>

During the bilateral meeting which preceded the signing ceremony, both ambassadors agreed that there was the need to strengthen the relationship and gave their respective government\u2019s commitment to promote a mutual understanding of strengthening the friendship and cooperation.<\/p>\n

Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. E. P. Chet Greene in welcoming the signing of diplomatic relations said that his government\u2019s foreign policy is geared toward expanding its relations with nations around the world in the interest of advancing peace, mutual respect and complementarity.\u00a0 He noted that there is also an historical emphasis in developing and reconnecting with countries in the African continent with links to the region.<\/p>

The engagement between both Ambassadors in New York last week, concluded with the undertaking of the exemption of visa waiver upon arrival for diplomats from both countries in the first instance and then exploring exemption of visa waiver upon arrival for regular passport holder from both countries.<\/p>

Their Excellencies also agreed on student exchange programmes where nationals of Antigua and Barbuda will be afforded the opportunity to study at universities in the Republic of Rwanda and nationals of the Republic of Rwanda will have the opportunity to study at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Webson took the opportunity to put forward his government\u2019s interest in having a more physical presence in Rwanda and vice versa with the intention of having an OECS diplomatic office in the Republic of Rwanda and a diplomatic office of the Republic of Rwanda in Antigua and Barbuda serving as the hub for the OECS.<\/p>
