The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) plans to secure a loan for $30 million in an effort to refurbish its damaged water network.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

According to reports, maintenance is now costing the authority over $15 million a year (or $1.25 million per month) because of obsolescence and excessive wear and tear.<\/p>\n

APUA\u2019s water unit has come under great scrutiny, especially over the last two weeks, as residents have experienced less than a frequent supply of water over that time.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

The General Manager of APUA Esworth Martin and the Water Business Manager Ian Lewis have given the Cabinet a long list of reason for the latest round of water problems in the country.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

They were called to explain the water shortage after MP\u2019s said they received complaints from constituents.<\/p>\n

The manager reported that APUA is performing preventative maintenance on several water tanks and lines before Christmas.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The APUA team also reported that though three reverse osmosis plants are located at Ffryes Bay, only one could be utilized these past 14 days because of the \u201cground swell\u201d.<\/p>\n

The men reported that reduction in production caused more than 14 million gallons of potable water not to be produced, in the past two weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome additional investments will be made to limit the sucking-up of sand and other debris by the plants,\u201d the Cabinet reported after its meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The APUA team also estimated that nearly 40% of the water produced by APUA is lost to cracked and broken mains, especially in the old city of St. John\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The broken pipes were said to be another problem which the Cabinet insists \u201cmust be replaced and directed the APUA to secure the financing required to change the broken, older pipes.\u201d<\/p>\n

In seeking to explain the Brown colour of the water the APUA officials reported that:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bore in the pipes is also reduced over time by encrusted materials that build-up on the inside of the pipes, narrowing delivery amounts; the material cannot be removed. The discoloration of water is the result of encrusted tanks, one of which was recently opened for cleaning and was clearly the culprit in discolored water. The tanks store water for onward delivery, especially at nights when consumption slows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a totally unacceptable position,\u201d said Cabinet spokesman, Information Minister Melford Nicholas, \u201cso the mandate the APUA department had yesterday is to procure what funding is necessary to be able to get to a position where the grid that delivers the water to consumers is repaired and restored.\u201d<\/p>\n

This funding, Nicholas said, \u201cwould come from the normal commercial borrowings\u201d.<\/p>\n

The work on the water network is set to begin during the first quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
