The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Honourable Gaston Browne, has written to the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, His Excellency Nicolas Maduro, to congratulate him on his party\u2019s electoral victory in recently-held municipal elections.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister noted that 17 of 23 Governorships had been won by the party of President Maduro, and further remarked that democracy in Venezuela was evidently alive and well. The opposition coalition in Venezuela is poorly organized and in disarray, many commentators have declared, and the party of Chavez\/Maduro is better at governance and at politics.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Antigua and Barbuda leader noted that his country stood opposed to interference in the internal affairs of states, and withheld support for an OAS (Organization of American States) resolution in June 2017, that sought to isolate Venezuela and to engineer a regime-change.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Democracy will always prevail, the 50-year old Antigua and Barbuda leader affirmed. He cited the Inter-American Democratic Charter which was adopted in 2001. Its primary function is to safeguard democracy in the hemisphere; the Charter is not to be used to remove a democratically-elected government. The Prime Minister regarded that attempt as heretical and warped.<\/p>\n

Venezuela and Antigua and Barbuda have had close relations for nearly 45 years, when the George Walter\/PLM administration turned to Venezuelan President Andres Perez to provide a loan for the acquisition of LIAT. The regional airline was owned at the time by a British holiday airliner called Court Line. It became bankrupt and carried LIAT under with it. Relations between Venezuela and Antigua and Barbuda remain very strong.<\/p>

Venezuela will hold Presidential elections in a year, or in late 2018.<\/p>\n
