People with illegal firearms have been given one month to turn their weapons into the police, no questions asked.<\/span><\/p>

The Cabinet has agreed to extend a gun amnesty from\u00a0October 15 to November 15<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to allow individuals to hand over their guns before the amendments to the Firearms Act takes effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lower House passed the Bill on Thursday which allows for automatic jail time for persons found guilty of illegal gun and ammunition possession. Fines will no longer be an option for sentencing.<\/span><\/p>

Individuals face jail time for up to five years if convicted of the offence.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the government is giving individuals the opportunity to surrender their firearms to the police now to avoid the more serious penalty.<\/span><\/p>\n

People can hand over their weapons to a police station and it has been promised that no charges will be brought against them.<\/span><\/p>

The government, however, has admitted that these types of programmes are not effective, and added that in the past they have yielded little to no results.<\/span><\/p>\n

A $20,000 reward has been offered to individuals for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons with illegal firearms.<\/span><\/p>
