The American University of Antigua (AUA) held to its word as it donated a desperately-needed retractable bed to Yorks resident and amputee, Vernon \u201cBashai\u201d Edwards, to his nearly-completed new home yesterday.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Edwards heart-wrenching story went viral two months ago when our newsroom paid him a visit at his home and saw the deplorable living conditions under which he lived.\u00a0This, coupled with the fact that Edwards is suffering with a disability that has left him virtually immobile for more than 15 years, caused a great outpouring of support and subsequent pledges from people who decided to assist with items needed to help build his new 15\u2019 x 15\u2019 wooden home.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to present this bed to Mr. Vernon Edwards to aid in his wellness,\u201d says Marlon Destin, AUA\u2019s manger of EMTC\/CSRC and Laboratory Services.<\/p>

\u201cAnything that we can do to aid of wellness of one person, we are happy to do so.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Persons with Disabilities Association, Bernard Warner expressed his, \u201cthanks to the AUA and all the persons who stepped up and contributed towards to making Edwards’ home a reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis bed is going to bring us much closer to (Bashai) occupying his home.\u201d The president continued, \u201cAs you can see the home is 99 per cent complete. Just for us put on a door and a ramp and he\u2019s in.\u201d<\/p>

The president expects Edwards to move into his new residence this\u00a0Sunday 8 October<\/span>. There are a few items needed for completion of the house, however.<\/p>\n

Two Sheets of 3\/4 formply and two lengths of 2 x 4 x 16 lumber are needed to make the ramp for the Yorks amputee. Also, two gallons of green paint are required to finish painting the exterior of the house.<\/p>

Vernon Solomon, VP of Administration and Community Affairs at the AUA, has pledged, \u201cAUA\u2019s commitment in working along with the Disabilities Association to assist in helping other members of the community living in similar conditions.\u201d<\/p>
