Antigua and Barbuda is expected to see spiral bands associated with Hurricane Maria moving in by later today, according to officials from the Met Office.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Meteorologist Lorne Salmon said the center of Maria is expected to pass between Dominica and the French island of Guadeloupe, and will be at its closest point to Antigua about 8 a.m. tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Salmon said the storm would be somewhere within 70 miles southwest of Antigua at this point.<\/p>

\u201cWe are actually seeing some spiral bands moving ahead of the core of Maria and so by later this afternoon, perhaps into the night, there is a very good chance that we could see some of these bands sweeping across us, and with those bands, we could have some showers some of which could be heavy at times and have some thunderstorms as well, and there is a good chance that these conditions could get a little bit squally where we could have some gusty winds around,\u201d Salmon said on radio this morning.<\/p>

The meteorologist said residents should take the approaching storm seriously, since any weather system which passes south of the island, \u201cand this close south\u201d,\u00a0is something that we have to monitor very carefully \u201cbecause there is a tendency for these systems to move towards the north, and so a shift towards the north could bring it dangerously close to us\u201d.<\/p>\n
