DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK<\/p>\n

——————————<\/p>\n

At 800 AM AST (1200 UTC), the center of Hurricane Maria was located<\/p>\n

near latitude 14.6 North, longitude 59.7 West. Maria is moving<\/p>\n

toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km\/h), and this motion<\/p>\n

with a decrease in forward speed is expected through Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

On the forecast track, the center of Maria will move across the<\/p>\n

Leeward Islands late today and tonight, and then over the extreme<\/p>\n

northeastern Caribbean Sea Tuesday and Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Reports from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft<\/p>\n

indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 110 mph<\/p>\n

(175 km\/h) with higher gusts.\u00a0 Maria is currently a Category 2<\/p>\n

hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.\u00a0 Additional<\/p>\n

rapid strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Maria<\/p>\n

is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane before it moves<\/p>\n

through the Leeward Islands.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from<\/p>\n

the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105<\/p>\n

miles (165 km).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The minimum central pressure estimated from the Hurricane Hunter<\/p>\n

aircraft data is 967 mb (28.56 inches).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND<\/p>\n

———————-<\/p>\n

WIND:\u00a0 Hurricane conditions are first expected within portions of<\/p>\n

the Leeward Islands by late today, with tropical storm conditions<\/p>\n

beginning during the next several hours.\u00a0 Hurricane conditions are<\/p>\n

possible within the hurricane watch area by Tuesday, with tropical<\/p>\n

storm conditions possible tonight.\u00a0 Tropical storm conditions are<\/p>\n

possible in the tropical storm watch area through tonight.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

STORM SURGE:\u00a0 A dangerous storm surge accompanied by large and<\/p>\n

destructive waves will raise water levels by as much as 5 to 7 feet<\/p>\n

above normal tide levels near where the center of Maria moves<\/p>\n

across the Leeward Islands.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

RAINFALL: Maria is expected to produce total rain accumulations of<\/p>\n

6 to 12 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches across the<\/p>\n

central and southern Leeward Islands, including Puerto Rico and the<\/p>\n

U.S. and British Virgin Islands, through Wednesday night.\u00a0 Maria is<\/p>\n

also expected to produce total rain accumulations of 2 to 4 inches<\/p>\n

with isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches over the remaining<\/p>\n

northern Leeward Islands from Barbuda to Anguilla, as well as the<\/p>\n

Windward Islands and Barbados.\u00a0 Rainfall on all of these islands<\/p>\n

could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SURF:\u00a0 Swells generated by Maria are affecting the Lesser Antilles.<\/p>\n

These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip<\/p>\n

current conditions.\u00a0 Please consult products from your local<\/p>\n
